Have found a 2TB WD Green drive for £80 which seems to be the cheapest I can get and has 2 years warranty. So will probably get that. I thought of an SSD but don't see the point considering my usage.

Even though it is free? If WHS 2011 would be better then I would pay the £35 as I guess it isn't much.

Nothing wrong with Server 2012, but you aren't going to use a single feature.

What about putting windows 8 on it? Or no good? Only ive used windows 7 for my computer and they only give you one key.

Don't see why not. For what you're planning I suspect anything from XP forwards would be fine.

But if I install a 'normal windows os such as 7 or 8 how do I login to it. On whs you had a console but can I just connect to it over network etc rather than online and use it like any other pc so that it is a real headless nas?

Same way, or, alternatively multiple ways. Personally I set mine up with a monitor/kb etc and then installed some remote control software (I use TeamViewer) so I can access it from anywhere (including over the internet). Equally you could use VNC or even just enable RDP (Remote Destop) in Windows and then use that. Mines running 7, stuck in a cupboard with just the network and power connected to something.

When you say RDP over internet. Is there no way to do it on the network? As I assume that would be faster?

Ok I have been setting up the microserver this weekend (lovely wee box!). I have connected to it over rdp from my main computer. However how do I make sure it is connecting over the network rather than the internet?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on the HP microserver and win 7 pro on my main computer

Thinking of installing XBMC but not sure how good it is compared to other things available, if anything!
