    SATA CD/DVDROMS/Writers

Has anyone had any experience of these? my current cdwriter is erm, playing up a bit (sticking when trying to unload a cd) and see these are just starting to appear. Wondered what they were like...

Wouldn't have thought they were any different to current drives - it's not as if a DVD drive is stressing PATA. Tom's Hardware have looked at an MSI drive: http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/20040709/index.html

As for the others, I guess it's a question of waiting a few more weeks/months. Apart from the neater cables, I wouldn't expect too much, though. Me, I'd just go with a decent PATA drive (much wider choice) and use a slim rounded cable.

The reason they are not as common on the market at the current time is that they only work with the serial ATA thats founds on intels motherboards and not 3rd party serial ATA controllers such as promise, nvidia, and silicon image. I think they are looking into a way of getting them to work with these before we'll see an influx of SATA based drives on the market.
