Assuming you're happy to spend the money on it - which I assume you are or you wouldn't have listed it - I'd get the 250GB Sammy 840. The noticable speed-up between SSDs and mechnical drives is from the faster random access times, not the sequential speeds, and Samsung have a good reputation for quality and relaibility in SSDs. With 250GB you won't really have to worry too much about what programs you're putting where - just make sure all your media files go on a hard drive and everything else can probably go on your SSD My HTPC had skyrim, X:COM, Torchlight 1 & 2, Dungeon Seige, TF2, and a few other games installed, and its only just ticked over 100GB. 250GB for programs should keep you going for ages

Good advice there from Sacryjim. Based on that I would defo avoid the Sandisk. Some suppliers still have some Samsung 830 stock so if you are worried about the MLC vs TLC issue you could always get the Samsung 830 258GB

Not sure if it will mean much to you but it appears Apple are using some SanDisk SSDs: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6727/a...ok-pro-as-well

However, it's a Marvell drive rather than Sandforce.

Re: Need help with choose pc upgrade

I think we can all safely say that speed difference between one ssd and another is very small in real-world, right?

    I'm happy to buy a 250gb+ ssd.

Now regarding reliability...Since TLC drives can last 10yrs+ on average usage and i doubt i'm going to be using it that much, i'm happy with a TLC drive.

Also i don't know why everyone says that Sandisk is not as reliable as Samsung for example, because i could not find any reviews on it's reliability....do you guys have any links to show that the Sandisk is unreliable?

Corsair 430W CXM Builder Modular 80 Plus Bronze PSU 3 Year Warranty???????????? - £38.53 (Can i get this a bit cheaper????)
Samsung SH-224BB SATA DVD Write Optical Drive | OEM - £13.98

    Sub-Total= £351.92 without hard drive

Barely any, synthetic benchmarks are great for willy waving, but they dont really give you any information for the real world. One SSD will be just the same as the next for what you are likely to use it for. Its only if you use a lot of un-compressible data (e.g. data which has already been compressed such as RAR files or compressed HD video) that you would notice the difference between SLC, MLC and TLC. The difference between one MLC and the next MLC will be even less noticable.

Its not that sandisk are unreliable, its that samsung are proven and trusted, in this community at least. I would suspect if you got a sandisk and updated the drivers, it would probably be fine.

You might also get away with free delivery from scan aswell, although you are not hugely active on the forums.

Sorry i didn't get that...is this a scan computer forum?

Also the parts i have listed are not available in one place...For example the gfx card is from dabs, the pc case is from amazon....i need to get everything from one company, otherwise it starts costing a lot more Do i need to change some components to get them from one place?

This. It's more a lack of evidence that sandisk are reliable than a weight of evidence that they're unreliable. The fact that it's hard to find evidence suggests that not many people are using Sandisk SSDs, which means they're not as widely tested, so we just don't know how reliable they are. However, there are lots of people - on this forum at least - who've been using Samsung SSDs for a couple of years, and haven't had any problems. So we know how reliable they are

No, but Scan offer free shipping to active Hexus users with 20 constructive posts or more. Since you've got plenty more than that, and are obviously quite active on the forums (70+ posts in a month is definitely active ), you can register for free shipping: see the details at http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-he...tup-guide.html

oh right i see, thanks scaryjim. The only issue is mate that i can't seem to find all products within one company. I also was hoping to build a smaller pc, whereas this one is ATX...any advice on that? Can we still fit a large gfx card on say a micro atx motherboard and smaller pc case?

It shouldn't cost any more and also I would get that XFX 450W. Its not modular but made by Seasonic. Corsair seem to be use a hodge podge of capacitor brands in their lower end PSUs including Jun Fu!!

right cheers cat. Would you know where i can get hold of the HEXUS USER ID from? Scan is asking for this. Also the BIOSTAR motherboard...is it any good as i couldn't find any reviews on it and i've seen an ASUS78L or a GIGABYTE 970 on for similar price.

Scroll to the bottom of any forum page. In the bottom blue bar, just right of centre, in black text, there should be "Userid: " followed by a number, probably in the 100,000s for you (mine is 47,152, for example)

Re: Need help with choose pc upgrade

well all is good and i'm about to order the above spec that cat recommended. Only issue is that i would have preferred a smaller pc, rather than a large atx. Is it true that i wouldn't be able to fit in the chosen 7770 gfx card if i went micro-atx?

None the less, it's a lot more active than many people - even if it is only in this thread At the end of the day it's an offer from Scan, so they decide who gets it and who doesn't, but I can't imagine they'd deny you it given your current posting record. However, they are free to withdraw the offer at any time: something to be aware of.

OTOH, get free shipping now and that gives you two places where you can choose components and not pay extra for shipping, always a good thing
