My hard disk has started making occasional clunking noises when its searching data but i have no errors on screen and things seen to be running as normal.
Could it be screwed too tightly in the case?

The only time i have ever heard a hard disk make clunking noises is when it failed
Run scan disk to check if there are any erros on the disk.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
Its totally normal for a hard drive to make clunking noises isn't it?
As long as its not too loud (Unless its an old hard drive - they will be noisy) it should be fine
Maybe its because your fans are going slower in the cooler weather that you're hearing it more clearly
One of my laptops gets occasional clunks, but has no more than a couple of BSODs every month. I'd be thinking about backing up the data before it does give up.
My main laptop, which is newer started getting occasional clicks/clunks, then over about a month the Hd got worse to the point where it would only boot up 1 in 5 times, and even then i'd have to be careful as i backup all the data as it would randomly crash on the click, and just keep clicking until i hard reset.
So its hard to tell some keep trucking for years, others go within weeks. Just back up to be safe. I'd suggest getting a large IDE HD and an external enclosure if you have nothing else to back it up onto. It was my only choice with a laptop
