    gfx card = ti4600 128mb

I have a gf4ti4600 and would like to know which of the new series of nvidia card is = to it as looking to build a system for a friend = mine roughly. He plays a few games and will probably play doom 3 and HL2 etc

Also a good make is desired.

Any help appreciated and if anyone knows of any ti4600's for sale (am looking on ebay) that would also be great.

    Thanks

no idea, actually, butwhat kiind of price is he willing to pay for it?

Of the new nvidia cards, that is the 6800 range, I think there all a bit above the TI4600.

Infact, even the new Nvidia MOBILE (6800 go) gpu is faster, probably about twice as fast (in dx9 games). It scores around 6.4k in 3dmark03, wheras my 9500np gets 4k, and my overclocked 9700np *rip* got about 6.2k (about the same as a 9800pro)

If you dont want to spend much, look at the older gen, 58xx/59xx.

www.retekdirect.co.uk have some fairly cheapaticards, dunno about nvidia. I assume you definatly dont want an ATI card, any reson for that?

You say you want to play doom3 and HL2, I think you should probably look at newer 68xx range, Ive got a ati 9500np which is overclocked, definatly better than a ti4600, and it plays doom3 like crap.

Errr, the Ti4600 was great over 2 years ago.
It is dwarfed by even the midrange cards now.

What do you mean by "= to"?

You can pick up a Ti4600 or 4800 very cheap 2nd hand, but WHY? They're not going to be any good for Doom3 or HL2.

If you mean "equivalent", then it is the Geforce FX 6800GT or 6800 Ultra, as the 4600 was top of the range in its day. The GT is better value, and can be had for ~£250 I think. These are better value than ATi rivals too.

Gainward are the best make, but there is a price premium. There's not a lot to choose between brands, as they all follow the reference design now. Look for differnent cooler designs and software to make your choice.

Alternatively, if you want cheaper and good value, pick up an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb for ~£130. (As opposed to the inferior rival the nVidia GeForce FX 5900)
These are from the previous generation of cards.

You might be better off going for a radeon 9800pro or even a referb 9700pro it would probably beat the 5900 in most games. But if you really want to go for nvidia the 5900 should do.

I would avoid getting a nVidia 5600 or ATi 9600, there're the last generation mid range and aren't going to last that much longer in the latest games. The minimum you really want to get now is a 9800 Pro, or a current generation midrange (6600GT or X700 Pro/XT, personally I'd go for the 6600GT, but there's barely anything in it), which should be coming soon on AGP at around £140. The new mid range generally seems to be slightly better than the older 9800 Pros, except in higher resolution tests, where the 9800 Pro starts to catch up.

Of course, you could just spend loads of money and get a 6800GT, but that would be a lot more expensive!
