    Question CM Hyper 212 EVO / Hyper 412s - GA-Z87X-D3H clearance & weight ok?

    Hey folks,

I'm considering upgrading from the stock cooler on my i5-4670k so I can start to overclock it a little.

While I'd like to be getting a bad-ass Phanteks or Noctua I can't spare the cash right now. I'm looking around the £15-25 mark and the 212 EVO (while being on the high end of that) seems pretty popular. I've heard it's not that much of an improvement over the stock cooler though, is this true?

Are they others in my price range that I should be considering instead? I'm looking for the best balance of cooling and quiet I can get, and the lower in the price range the better!

Looking forward to hearing all your thoughts!
    Cheers,
    Frankie

edit: Now trying to find out if Cooler Master Hyper 412s will fit in a Corsair 230t (I think it will) on a GA-Z87X-D3H motherboard (not so sure) and clear Corsair Vengeance LP ram (I think this bit is ok...). >.<

    edit:
Side question - do the coolers come with thermal paste usually or do I need to get my own? I already have some Arctic MX-4 thermal compound if that's the right stuff/any good/has a decent shelf life (never opened but I bought it a couple of years ago)?

Re: CM Hyper 212 EVO - worth buying over i5-4670k stock cooler & other LGA1150 option

I've no idea what the 4670 stock cooler is like from a thermal perspective but I'd pretty much guarantee the 212 is quieter.

Re: CM Hyper 212 EVO - worth buying over i5-4670k stock cooler & other LGA1150 option

The 212 Evo is much better than the stock cooler, esp if you're looking to do some overclocking.
Only thing I'd say is how wide is your case? clearance is the main thing you need to watch out for.
Any 120mm fan based tower cooler will be a big step up from the stock cooler, if the case is too narrow to fit a 120mm fan based cooler then a 92mm fan based cooler would be the next best option.

The 212 Evo does come with thermal paste but your MX4 is also a good paste, pastes sort of have a shelf life, it depends on the paste, but generally no.
If it's not been sealed correctly, then it can dry out.
Some pastes can separate with age, so you might get thin oil and thickened paste separately coming out, you just need to mix them back together, the oil is there just to help keep the paste fluid for spreading.

I have the CM 212 Evo and can thoroughly recommend it. I have an i5 3570k and changed the turboboost from 3.8GHz to 4.2 GHz and have only seen a 2C increase in temperature. Mind you I didn't have to up the voltage as well

Re: CM Hyper 212 EVO - worth buying over i5-4670k stock cooler & other LGA1150 option

Thanks everyone, looks like I've found the cooler for me!

Assuming it fits that is... (good point, Pob).
My case (Corsair Graphtie 230T) has about 6.5" from the board to the side panel so I think it should be OK (6.3" is the cooler height though so it'll be a little tight, does it matter if the ends of the heat pipes touch the side?).

Little concerned that the RAM slots are quite close to the CPU (mobo GA-Z87X-D3H) but I'm using low profile RAM so I think the fan will be over the top of it... In case it isn't, does it matter if the fan is used to push or pull air through the cooler (ie. can I put the fan on whichever side I want)?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to make sure I wont end up having to return it >.<

That case can house coolers of up to 160MM which is same as mine so you'll be fine

As for RAM this probably won't be an issue either, which RAM is it? I am using slot 2 and 4 for RAM so the fan isn't over but it wouldn't be an issue anyway since the RAM I have is low profile.

    CM Hyper 212 EVO / Hyper 412s - GA-Z87X-D3H clearance & weight ok?

Cheers, dacads. I came to the same conclusion (by making an appropriately sized paper box xD) so it's nice to have some backup

The RAM sticks are in the slots further from the CPU but at some point I will probably want to use all of them. They're Corsair Vengeance LP sticks so hopefully that LP part will come in handy.

I'm now looking at the Hyper 412S as well, which is about 2 quid more, a fair bit bigger (132 x 106 x 160mm instead of 120 x 80 x 159 mm)... It also weighs nearly 1.2lbs which seems a lot to me. :s Don't suppose you just happen to have any experience with that cooler and its clearance of the top heatsink on the GA-Z87X-D3H do you? Haha.

Well with that LP RAM you will have no problem

    Good to know, thanks.
I went for the 212 Evo in the end anyway though - I read up on them a bit and the performance difference was pretty marginal. Figured I may as well get the one that's less likely to be in the way of a chunky GPU or whatever in the future

Glad to know the Ram wont be in the way though.
