    Angry Possible RMA Problems

I'm having a difficult time trying to RMA a thermalright 900U heatsink that I mistakenly ordered. The company is claiming that I must pay a 15% restocking fee because they are unable to clean off some fingerprints off the copper side. I don't see how hard it would be to wipe off fingerprints off the side of the heatsink. Am I being screwed with?

    Thanks Again Guys!

Perhaps it would be better to sell it on in the For Sale forum and avoid the hassle.

Yup - who is it ?

Sounds a bit fishy to me. Presumably once you've paid the 15% they are going to get some metal polish & clean it up for resale at normal price.

    Which company is it?

Spritzup may have to pay for the return postage from the vendor so the gain may be marginal

Yep - looks like they have got him over a barrel on this one.

Why not tell them it was pristine when it left you & it must be one of their fingerprints.

I just think it's all too much hassle IMHO.

I'm sure someone would take it off your hands for a reasonable price

I'd guess £6 for the 15% restocking vs £5 to get it back, a loss on the sale because it's "second hand" plus the hassle. A greater loss may well be made than returning it.

Sometimes it's just best to walk away particularly as the sum in this case isn't large.

    Just my 2p worth

The company is vibe computers in Canada. I thought it sounded a little fishy to me. I mean how hard is it to wipe off fingerprints off a copper surface. The extent of my touching it was opening it up, realizing I'd ordered the wrong heat sink, picking it up and hoping it would fit anyways, realizing it wouldn't fit, and putting it back in the box. And yes I'd have to pay for postage back.

I guess you could threaten to go to a governmental trading body (equivalent to Trading Standards in the UK) because they are imposing a unreasonable charge. I'm not sure how successful it would be though.

A 15% restocking fee is more than fair - ordering wrong stuff by mistake isn't suppliers fault - teh time to recieve your RMA back and process it alone should be paid for IMHO.

Yes 15% is not unreasonable. It seem to be the 15% restocking fee because it has a finger mark that confuses the issue. I'd have expected them to say that they would not take it back at all because it was not in as new condition or yes it's as new but we charge 15% to restock (checking time etc).

Do Canadian suppliers normally restock for free ?

It's not a matter of the 15% restocking fee, it's there reasoning behind it. I don't see the difficulty in removing a fingerprint from a copper surface. I had e-mail them previously and they had responded as long as the package was sealed and resellable I would not incur the fee. I don't feel wiping off a fingerprint makes an item not resellable.

Vibe say that they are "unable to clean off some fingerprints" is that they won't try or they've tried and the fingerprints just won't come off.

Again I would question whether the effort is really worth the $10CAN (£4.50) the restocking fee will cost you.
