True, but only if he buys two identical cards now for £700 ; there may be a more powerful single card by the time he gets another GT.

Also detective, SLi only really comes into it's own at high resolutions, so dont spend loads of money on it unless you get a decent monitor that can do 1600x1200.

Oi nvening, quit taking a new post for every line. It is annoying. You can post more than one thing at once yknow.

As for your system, do you have any mates who would build for you? Where in the UK do you live? I'm sure if there is any of us near you we would be happy to build it for you, which would save you a fair bit. If you want the best then I suppose FX55 is the way to go, maybe 2 6800gts, 300gb HDD, 1gb PC3200 XL a nice Plextor 716a DVD rewriter and what ever else you were thinking on.

Bear in mind that system is for top of the range. Some would say overkill. What are you going to do with this system? Also, what games will you be playing on it if you are playing games?

    Most defiinately

I would still have a think about investing lots of wonga in SLi though - it would be better to buy one card now, then another a bit later when they are cheaper, as nvening said.

A single 6800gt can handle every game on the market extremely well on its own at the moment!

Games like HL2 and Rome total war. I'm trying to get a system that won't need upgrading in 18months so I can still play the latest games.

Actually, this graphics card is great. One of the best out there. The fastest GPU out there right now is Ati's X850. Give it a look. Although if I were you I would probably get myself two XFX Geforce 6800gt's.

A single 6800gt can handle those admirably
That in itself should last a fair while without the need to upgrade, but when you do need a boost, you could a) Stick another *identical* 6800gt in, or b) sell the single card and buy the new whizzy top end card that'll be out at the time.

Best get an Nvida GPU or an Nforce 4 ultra board (as nforce4 is the best)

Reading back over the posts nvening said I can't use two x800xts with SLI. Just wanted to confirm this is the case. I see 6800GTs are recommended but I'm just weighing up the options.

yeah thats right, sli is nvidia only so 6800gt's etc, ati should have something similar one day i should imagine, but for now its ati for the fastest single card, or nvidia for the double 6800gts.......whooooooooosh (the sound of this rig flying past mine!)

It may be worth getting the new DFI SLi board when it comes out.

What's the difference with the new DFI SLI board, skuzgib? And any ideas when that's out?
