is it XP ur running and is it pro if so have you checked if the spare drive space shows in the drive section of computer management, its in the administrator section of control panel? if you cant see the administrator icon ensure you have classic view set from the left hand side of the window

    yes xp
    yes pro
no looked in comp management etc...

just wondering when I went to format the drive it said 13xxxxx something... and not 16xxxxx instead. and now windows still thinks its 130 total...

oh my god...just looked in the management section! 21gb lurking there 'unallocated'! the cheeky buggers! now what do I do to get that back? esp. when it didn't show up on the format screen?!

edit: how do I stick it onto the end of my big 120gb bit?

I have 10gb for OS, the rest for files/folders etc, and a spare hdd for pagefile...

if you have nothing on the big drive yet then right click the 120 ang delete the partition do the same on the other and you should get 1 solid lump of unpartitioned space right click format bag

ah nuts... 9.77 (for some reason its given 9.77 not 10 as I asked, never mind) along with 139.28 is 149.05 not 160...still 10 short. whats happened to that 10gb then??!!
oh and do I want the partition to be primary or extended partition?

A 160GB HDD is actually 160,000,000,000 bytes, which is 149.01GB, hence the difference you saw.

well done butcher been reading this thread there about to mention the way drive makers sell there drives , u will never get what they claim as the bits/ bytes comes into it and screws it all up

my maxtor 300gb shows up as around 250 gb in windows i think i cant remember ( only plug it in when archiveing files to it

IIRC, in agreement with Butcher's post, WinXP's disk management expects partition sizes in relation to physical bytes space on the drive, not formatted capacity.

Just a quickie regarding the Tagan. The clicking is a known fault, mine had this before it went bang, nothing else was damaged.

On a positive note though, I RMA'd it back to Scan including all cables etc and I received a new PSU within 3 days.

My Tagan clicks, I don't really notice it as it'svery quiet, I RMAed one because of it but the new one also did it so I assumed it was normal...
