    Abit NF7-S NB Fan

I've discovered just now that the Northbridge fan on my Abit NF7-S 2.0 is the little bugger that's making a lot of noise. I think it's either on it's way out or needs oiling.

Anyway my question is, would it damage the motherboard/northbridge if I ran it without the fan plugged in, but still attached to the chip?

I'm running a 2400+ at 2700+ and the FSB is 333MHz, so it's not exactly being pushed hard.

    THanks.

Take if off the mobo - take the sticker off the top - drop a bit of oil in it (proper stuff not WD-40) and then cover the hole back up again.

    That'll probably sort it.

I'll second that... I have a Zalman one, and whilst I have no stability problems, it does get quite hot... so I think the stock h/s would struggle if the fan wasn't running.

Whats wrong with wd-40? works for me..

Get a proper nb cooler. The stock one is just a bent up peice of alu sheet and a crappy niosy fan.. doesnt work particually well...

touch the back of the nb, if you can.. thatll tell ya how hot it is, at stock running at 200fsb it probably hits 90c.

Get a cheap cpu heatsink, cut it to size and drill a few monuting holes, bolt it on, or thermal glue it on.. and it wil run much better

As a rule it's too thin, but if it works for you then fair enough.

Those abit NB fans are so noisy....oiled or not, great board I just hate the buzz off the fan. Do try a Zalman NB HeatSync.

WD 40 ist actually a lubricant, it is really for dispersing water, if you need lubricant use GT 85 that has teflon in it which will make it stick to the moving parts.

i use a zalmann passive heatsink on my nf7 tho

My fan on the same mobo was making a racket. I unplugged it months ago and have not had any stability issues whatsoever.

40mm fans in general are buggers for noise. Rip it off (not literally of course) and stick a heatsink on there. Just make sure theres some air moving over it and it should be orite. Im using my old pentium 1 heatsink, though it did need to be modified before fitted, but it works a treat .

All of the above, except SilentDeath's last comment, which I don't agree with.

    1. All 40mm fans are going to be horrifically noisy.

    2. You can pull it off / disconnect the fan and things will be fine at idle. If the case has good ambient cooling and airflow around the NB area, things *may* be fine under load (though probably not - the Nforce northbridge runs very hot). At worst, you'll just crash under load applications ie games will dump you back into desktop etc. Try it and see.

    3. Stick on a passive NB heatsink. The Zalman one is only about £5.80 inc del and works a treat. http://www.thecoolingshop.com/produc...roducts_id/696

THank you Dabeeeenster.. Finally dsomeone actually answered my question And thanks Davidstone28 for your input

Today I might oil it if I feel disposed to remove the entire mobo to get the fan off... Lol. Otherwise I might just unplug it and see how Windows fares

Seems stable without the fan... I've just ordered a Zalman NB cooler though ( The blue one) just to make sure it stays safe
