Talking Looking to build a new rig

Hexites, I am looking to build a new rig for my sibling.
Budget isn't an issue but I don't want to spend like there's no tomorrow. He currently has a i5 2500 setup.

I am thinking of getting an i7 8700, CPU cooler, motherboard, 8GB DDR4 and a 4GB Gfx card. I already have a new 500GB Crucial SSD and will be re-using the Seasonic S12 II 500W PSU from the old rig.

A rough budget is still useful, and also what is the rig being used for? If its gaming - what games and at what resolution. Also how old is the PSU - older ones might have issues with the low power states in newer Intel CPUs. Are you overclocking?

    £500ish ?
It's going to be used for typical gaming ( 4k not required ) and your usual watching movies or web browsing. The PSU is 5 years old. The i7 will not be OC'ed.

I would cancel it if the budget is £500. To get an upgrade over your R9 380 you will need to spend at least £200.

That only leaves you £300 for the CPU,RAM and motherboard. You really need to go for at least 2666mhz DDR4 and ideally around 3000mhz.

    I am not upgrading my own PC. I now have a RX 580 : ) My sibling has a HD6850 1GB OC card ..
The i7, RAM and cooler has set me back £336. Let's say I have another £200ish for a motherboard and a mid-range graphics card. 1050Ti ?

Re: Looking to build a new rig

For what you're looking at the i7 is overkill/waste i5 is still the place, heck with the coffee lake i3 being a true quad core that's starting to look like a solid option
8gb is starting to look a bit weak, it's more than possible but 16gb is looking like a better option.
for gpu a gtx1060 6gb is what you really want to be looking at (£250-300ish) again the 1050ti (£160ish) is ok but looking forward the 1060 6gb is what I'd aim for.

in the current market you're looking at spending the most money for a single part on the gpu not the cpu (that's even before the whole mining stuff happened)

Personally with that budget, perhaps a Core i5 8400 or Ryzen 5 1600/2600 is what I have aimed for, even though the Core i7 8700 is still a solid CPU,but somewhat expensive especially if not with a top end graphics card.

However, since the bits have been ordered,I would be inclined to add some more to the budget.

The GTX1050TI is around £150 and is not worth it,especially since this RX580 4GB is £199:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/SAPPHIRE-Pu...ords=rx580+4gb

Its significantly cheaper than other RX580 cards around,so I would get that now. Regarding motherboard, even though a slightly cheaper B360 should do the trick as you are not going to overclock,I would still get this Z370 motherboard:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/GIGABYTE-Z3...&keywords=b360

It should have more options regarding memory tweaking and it I suspect it might have an MCE mode, which means you can run the CPU clockspeed somewhat higher,if you up the TDP rating, which should be OK since you are using a better cooler and not the stock one.

Re: Looking to build a new rig

    Personally no
maybe this https://www.scan.co.uk/products/cit-...io-mic-in-sd-r I greatly value case width esp when it comes to running cables, some more clearance above the motherboard with top vents and space for fans (granted something this lacks)

if you go mATX then I'll throw in the coolermaster q300l https://www.scan.co.uk/products/cool...i-itx-120mm-fa and the Areocool qs240 https://www.scan.co.uk/products/aero...indow-2x-usb30

here we go areocool ls5200 https://www.scan.co.uk/products/aero...luminium-body- or in white https://www.scan.co.uk/products/aero...luminium-body-
    review https://www.hardwaresecrets.com/aero...0-case-review/

    fractal design focus g https://www.scan.co.uk/products/frac...mid-tower-case

this game max case looks decent too https://www.scan.co.uk/products/game...-fan-2x-usb-30

    however I'd consider going mAXT

That GTX1050TI is a waste of money. I have a GTX960 4GB which is not far off it,and also had an RX470 4GB and it utterly destroyed it. The RX470 4GB is just about doable today in modern games at 1080p. I should know since I did a review:

    https://forums.hexus.net/reader-revi...chmarks-2.html

The bottom set of graphs are the RX470,which was one of the pre-overclocked models.

    The RX580 4GB is easily between 40% to 50% faster than a GTX1050TI 4GB.

All you have done is forced them to upgrade much quicker, and at great cost.

Also,I hope its a dual channel kit for the RAM,and not under 2666MHZ.

CFL,and Ryzen like RAM speed in games.

In some games like The Witcher 3 a Core i7 8700K lost 20FPS going from dual channel 2666MHZ to dual channel 2133MHZ RAM.

I see where you are coming from Moose, I just needed him to have any card that was better than the ancient HD6850.

The whole graphics card market has stagnated in performance under £300 sadly. You could get R9 290 cards for under £200 a few years ago. Mining has made things terrible - in late 2016,that RX470 I had cost £160! The pound was also weaker too!

It is better, but may I suggest you give us a bit of time to reply if you ask for advice I would have come up with pretty much the same advice as Cat, that RX580 is faster than a GTX 1060 for just £50 more than the 1050ti. But I was out having dinner last night so only just saw this.

What you have ordered will be OK, but for now it is very CPU heavy. On the upside, if in another year or two you want an update you can just do the graphics card as CPUs don't get much faster year on year.

Would have been nice to know what the old machine was as well.

Apologies, I was pressed for time. Have lot of DIY work to do around the house which I need to finish by Saturday and wanted to just get this out of the way.
    The old rig was a i5 2500 / MSI P67 / 8GB DDR3 / MSI HD 6850 OC 1GB / 500GB Samsung F3 / some Casecom case

What I should have done was hold onto my old MSI R9 380 , which I sold for £150ish.
