Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

Got a couple of weeks to decide. Either Asus Crosshair Hero VII with either 3900x or the 5800x or i7 10900 and my favourite board Asus maximus formula VII. Decisions decisions. Think the only thing stopping me with a Ryzen is that I have never have an AMD set up before.

Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

If it's mostly for gaming I wouldn't go for the 3900X or 10900. Either go 5800X or if you want to save yourself £130ish go with the 10700KF, for gaming the performance between the two is almost identical (especially above 1080p). I've got two builds, one with a 10700k and one with a 5900X, for general usage and gaming (rtx 3070) I can't tell the difference between the two. When it comes to tasks like rendering and encoding the 5900X excels though of course.

I was concerned about going AMD for the CPU too after bad experiences with AMD GPUs, it hasn't been perfect so far (hit with the X570 USB issues on multiple boards I've tried) but I still don't regret the 5900X purchase overall.

Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

7700x to anything Ryzen 5000 series would be a noticable upgrade. I went from 6700k and 1080ti to 3080 at 1440p. Newer games like Cyberpunk and Watch Dogs Legion were struggling on my CPU. I upgraded to a 10700k myself, but I reckon anything AMD based would get the same levels of improvement or even better

You would be very happy with a 5800x system from your 7700k. There is a lot to like about AMD systems for me, been using them for years, I did buy a 2500k and a 6600k but hey

asus rog crosshair viii hero wifi and arrives Monday from Scan.
Now this week I decide 5900x or the 5800x. Not going to lie a bit nervous going over to AMD and have never ever owned an AMD board and CPU before.

Similar boat to you in as much as I have not owned an AMD CPU for a very long time - last one I had was a thunderbird back in the early noughties, however, that isn't putting me off. The amount of positive press and traction that AMD have been garnering in the last few years have certainly re-assured me and the latest 5000 series just seem to be a no brainer. I can't quite decide whether to go 5600X or 5800X (5900X is just too much money for my wallet!!) I think i'll probably go 5800, purely for future proofing as I try and get 6-7 years out of a build with GPU change midway.

In short I'd say take the plunge If enough of us do (which I think already have) it will hopefully shake up the previous semi-monopoly that intel have enjoyed for so long..

Think I'm going to get the 5900x whilst my ball and chain agrees. I'm liking all the feedback and testing of the 5900x but the 5800x is not to shabby in the gaming tests. I do a lot of photoshopping so that's also the reason I'm leaning towards the 5900x

If you can justify the cost AND have approval from the OH then it's 5900X all the way

Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

Got my babies installed. New version of windows 10 ordered and I have the version where we could install from windows 7. I want a fresh install as I'm sure windows installed software for the old intel format. I think both things would be running in the background so want a fresh install.

Very nice, love the sight of a brand new fresh install !
Looks super neat in black as well (my last build was on haswell , and mobo’s were not quite as sleek and trendy back then !

What speed is that rather flashy RAM?

Only 3600mhz. Looking to get some more but wanting to get a new case first. My big 60 this year so will be doing a lot of hinting to the family toward September time.

    Only 3600 .......

I’m toying between a 5600x/5800x myself plus 16 v 32GB and was thinking 3600 was the sweet spot - does your research point to much improvement to be had from going higher? What I’d really like is a 2x16 config, but it’s just too much money for me at 3600 and above - so wasn’t sure whether to go with 2x16 at 3200 or 2x8 at 3600/4000

Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

Yeah I was lucky when I got this memory it was cheap when I got it. When I look at prices now it's crazy. I crazy enough at getting this 5900x at £525 but I thought I'd take the plunge. Was also looking at a card but my 2070 will have to last a bit. I will get 4 stick of 16gb at some point. But so want the 680x case as well.

Last time I saw my bank manager he told to take a seat but I said O was more comfortable on my knee's.

Lol - same boat - only difference being the OH doesn’t agree either !!!

In a similar although previous gen position ref our GFX cards - My 1080ti is perfectly adequate at 1440P- but normally I upgrade after 2 years/1 cycle , hence I skipped the 2080 and waited for the 3080 and guess what. I’ll probably have to wait for quite a while longer !!!!

So I thought time to overhaul the 4790k instead and keep with the 1080 for a while longer.

So the truth is I’m trying (like many) to put together a rig that will last another 6 years whilst keeping the cost to minimum lol

Re: AMD upgrade from i7 7700k

I used to look forward to my yearly upgrades and now I dread it. The prices for cards that's if you can them are crazy.
I wish you could get an Xbox where you could use my mouse and gamepad for all the games but that hasn't happened yet.
