Unusual Pricecheck - Damaged 9700pro

Rough story: About a year ago i bought a 9500 from Retek with the hopes of unlocking it to a 9700 and it didnt work at all. They replaced it a 9700pro which i was very happy about as this was quite high end at the time.

However in most games i get the dreaded checkerboard affect. I tried altering the voltages, added a vga silent cooler thing in case it was too hot but the only thing i have found to solve the problem is to underclock the processor on the card substantially.

Now i want to sell this card to get a faster one which runs fine at stock. I doubt i could sell this card on eBay as peple will run a mile after seeing its faulty. But even in its current state it is ok at running games, here are some aquamark 3 results:

Left column is roughly the fastest it will run without the artifacts, right is stock speeds:

Does it have a metal plate on the back of the card? If it does then underneath that are some vreg components... I bought one a while back that had this plate and it was wobbly - under closer inspection you could see that one of the vreg chips had 'broken legs' (pins) too so I presume someone had been handling the card using the plate. The card I have still works - even though I've since removed the plate and the chip came with it! It also has to be dramatically underclocked to run stable. Anyway - if you remove the plate a lot more carefully than I did it might be something you can fix with a bit of soldering.

yes, it does have a metal heatspreader plate on the back, ill have a look at it tonight but i think the plate is stuck to the chips anyway. Thanks.

What are the voltages running at now (Vgpu, Vdd, vddq, etc..)?

think your best bet it to put in on fleabay at 99p with no reserve, and hope you get two people fight over it.

I sold similar on eBay a short while back (another dead Retek card...) for about £20ish

you'll normally find broken stuff will sell for about £10-15 as people will fancy having a bash at fixing it themselves and getting even more of a bargain.

A friend of mine does it. A while back he picked up a GBA with a 'broken screen' for £12.50. Fixed the screen and robert is somehow related to you.

I just picked up a 9600 pro on ebay for 10p, flashed a new bios onto it and its working fine, just going to sell it for £40ish

You should be able to sell it, just say something along the lines of

"This may be fixable to those who know how, it doesn't seem like a big problem but I don't know how to fix it myself"

Then it sounds like its not actually broken but just configured wrongly and i'm sure someone will buy it to try to fix it.

I'm not making any promises, but if you send me as much info as you can, I'll look into the situation and see if there's anything we can do.


We're mainly known for our video cards, and don't get too many back (less than 5% - bearing in mind these are predominately refurbished). We have also extended our warranty to 90 days across the board for all our refurb cards from feedback we've had.
