Spilt wine all over a laptop...

No David, don't panic, it wasn't me.

My bro-in-law spilt a large glass of wine all over his lappy last night and rang me this morning for some advice.

He's taken it upon himself to undo the casing and sort of dismantle the thing, which I reckon means his warranty is kaput, especially as he had to drill a screw out to get it out.

I've told him the best thing to do is to bung it all in the airing cupboard for the weekend to dry out thoroughly, then stick it all back together and power it up using the battery only.

What do you guys think? Anyone had any experience of spilling stuff on their lappies?

Take out the drives, wash it with water (no soap), let it dry well (takes a day or two if you just leave it out, much faster with a hair dryer), then put everything back together.

His warranty was kaput anyway, they'd have been able to tell it's had a wine soaking. Dismantling it and leaving it to dry is probably the best thing, I'm not sure actually washing it will be necesary with the exception of the keyboard; if there's any obvious areas of sticky wine wipe them with a damp cloth.

If he's totally diamantled every bit of it, make sure he knows to put thermal grease on the processor, chipset and graphics if it has it before reinstalling the heatsink.

Damp cloth then some isopropyl with a non-static rag to clean it off then let it dry SLOWLY! I've seen so many people fry their mobiles after trying to dry it with a hair dryer.

How are you going to get the wine that got under the keys/inside of it clean with a damp cloth?

Submerging it in water is not going to hurt it, if the drives/battery have been removed, and if you let it dry well before trying to use it.
