    CPU names...

so, I have an AMD64 3000, its the 90nm/939 version...but it wasn't called a 'venice' when I got it. so whats the difference? or have amd ust got round to renaming things as a sales thing.
and how do they decide on names for cpu's any how? there's a prescott, will there be a brown and blaire, or perhaps a cherie?

If you got it awhile ago you got a Winchester and it is a completely different core. The Venice is very similar though. It has a few added things like SSE3 and an improved memory controller. At stock they will run identically, but the Venice will usually overclock better because of the improved manufacturing process. The names are not a sales gimmick. AMD can not afford to compete with Intel in the marketing game. It's not like Hyper-threading.

It's Prescot I believe. And the names are pretty much chosen by a person named Elvis. I don't think it's THE Elvis.

Intel names used to be landmarks with no particular meaning. However Intel marketers have changed to a more descriptive naming scheme and chose Prescott because it generates hot air and is less efficient that its predecessor.
