I think it will be possible to run crossfire on chipsets other than ATI chipsets as it is all implemented by the graphics card themselves and coordinated by the master card rather than the motherboard. The thing that will take a while is either someone to mod/hack it so it works properly on other chipsets and maybe one day official support but thats a long way off...

Check this out - somebody has managed to get 2 X700 cards working in Crossfire mode with nothing more than a simple BIOS update, no master card need.

The AnandTech link - The CrossFire performance mystery

and the link to the actual article which you will have to copy n paste to Google for translation - http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/atixfcracked-1.htm

I wonder what the difference is between simulated and real world (except when it comes to flying aircraft! )

I do think it opens a world of hacks and tweeks. Perhaps ATI is aware of this and the release of Crossfire mobos was a no brainer because it can already be done, if a little dirty. Or NVid doesn't like it. Dunno.

What they have done, could probably be done with any graphics card given two slots and the right drivers and bios.

Imo it not a desirable solution. I would prefer proper crossfire if im going to spend the money on two cards. I wouldnt mind having nf4 support though - and I dont understand why ati doesnt allow it.

I doubt many people will invest in crossfire if they are tied to ati chipsets.
