I avoid shutdown at all cost since my system is acting weird unable to warm boot
Anyway, I have my CPU set at 0.97V 7x24, doing xvid/x264 encodings. Those encodings are horribly slow. Extremely hard to find a time to shutdown unless I want to waste 12hr of encoding works...

I turn mine off over night but only reboot during the day when I have to. Like today for example. I switched from Agnitum Outpost firewall (free version) and AVG free to Zone Alarm with Antivirus

Generally I only reboot when prompted to. My PC goes off at night tho.

Rebooting doesn't bother me too much as it only takes 20seconds or so...

When you install a large program on the computer you should (apparently) preferably defrag, reboot, install, defrag, reboot, then use the program. However, I say this and I tend to leave my computers on 24/7 (work and home machines). There's supposed to be something about the directory pointer in windows that gets reset on a reboot that affects usage of the defragmented space ... though this may be ill-remembered or mistaken originally. Worth trying if you know you'll use the program lots though.

    i dont reboot too often.

A reboot does shorten your hardware lifepsan, as does turning off the power to your tv and turnng it on again - as your stopping the flow of electricity and the ehat generated by it, all components expand a minuent amount when heated, and contract when there is no power.

However rebooting is good for your OS, as it gives it a chance to reorganise files and instalise new hardware/software, hence after a large install, you reboot.

I never leave my PC on when I'm not using it. I live by the simple edict that the only safe PC is a PC that isn't turned on! Also, I am a little concerned as to what a 0.5 Megawatt power supply will do to the planet if left running 24/7!

Naff all if the computer is idle and efficient, drawing little in the power of power from it.

My server has been on constantly, the only time it has ever rebooted was during a storm about 3 months back

I reboot my main machine when I get problems, or it starts taking too long to load my pr0n

My laptop reboots when I wander and forget that it needs charging - DOH!

My Gentoo server, never need to reboot unless I need to reconfigure/recompile my kernel, or if I need to change hardware, which I really need to do soon (sticking in 2 160Gb disks and keeping one of the 120Gb disks in ). It currently has a 70 day uptime
My workstation machine, only if I'm not about I'll power it off or I need to do the above.

After having to reboot windows 95 to do ANYTHING, including (more often then not) browse files... i have lost the urge. And so my computer stays on unless it absolutely has to be turned off for a driver upgrade or something.

I do turn it off when i sleep about 1/2 the time, and I have 2gb of memory, it helps, certainly you dont worry about mem usage any more, whereas with 1gb i used to a *bit*.
