I brought the Optorite ML100 Laser Mouse from the US via a certain auction site and although it uses a cord it has no battiers and the same lazer tech as the logitech and for £20 seems to work fine

Dougal - you don't need to turn the software off to middle click in FF. Do this.
Open Set point > highlight "middle button" > under "Select Task" click other
click the Select Function button and select either "middle button" or "generic button".
