Slight deviation from the plan, the internals will be identical but my girlfriend has opted for a different case & blue cold cathode tubes.

Dual-core CPUs still seem a bit pointless given that we won't use the functionality - and it always leaves an upgrade path for the future

What is possibly the final project plan is now here, along with prices at today's rate.
Probably looking to buy the kit during October when we move into our new place, so the prices might be a little lower

I have two raptors stripped and the performance is great, my friend gets jealous watching far cry load. The SATA2 WD Caviar is decent, but seaking is the bottleneck as the disk starts filling its cache because of the 7200 rpm rotation, these physical charactoristics of 7200 rpm drives don't even push the SATA150 interface much less SATA300... I'd strongly suggest Raptors for much shorter loading/seak times. SCSI performance with SATA prices, couldn't be any better

In short.. 7,200 rpm with 16mb cache = great for benchies, 10,000 rpm with 8mb cache = great performance.

Besides, whats the chances of you using 400Gb when you have a file server to store everything? Feels like a waste.

Fair enough, though 72Gb would not be much use, given how much is taken on my current system with the OS, apps & game installations, so I would have to go for 2 of the 74Gb jobbies per rig.
I am currently using single 160Gb PATA drives in my systems, so I should be able to cope once the file server is used for MP3s, movies, pictures, etc.

Puts the price up quite a bit, but there's no point in cutting corners.

    No problem

I'm not a big fan of "drive doored" cases myself (i.e. I'm too lazy to open the door to open my dvdrw), but they look like they'll sit nice.

    Good set of power rigs

I like your website, my network consists of my main rig, a server and my router, nothing impressive lol.
