Looks like I NEED 64Bit now.
32Bit windows will only see 3.1GB of ram rather than 4GB.
Will try overclocking now

Nice, never seen that happen before!
But my asus mobo only reads my 2GB as 1.5GB.

Not sure what you're seeing but i'm seeing 4095MB = 4GB
I mean 32bit windows can only address up to around 3G but not 4G, thats why I need 64Bit windows to use the full 4G.Originally Posted by BenW
And that pic is about overclocking too

I do remember an issue of only 3.5GB being usable of 4GB, due to limitations of the x86 architecture. Think the missing memory is due to the 0.5GB of memory addresses being reserved for system space..like PCI I/O, AGP aperture, etc.
But as you say XP x64 can support up to 128GB supposedly.
Or you can use Windows-32 with PAE if you feel nostalgic for the days of DOS and paged expanded memory.
hey segments MADE programming fun!
You can buy a board from any good retailler and fill it with 24gig of ram. Just won't be many programs that can use it. Thing is using segments again (PAE) allows applications to be given upto 4gig per app. Enless your doing enterprise database stuff, this should just about be enough

and finally:

throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
memtest86 also doesn't map higher memory space than 3.0Gb, its a program limitation rather than OS (Bearing in mind that memtest86 is totally OS independent, its a mini-OS in its own right). Why would you even need that much anyway?
Vista with all the eye-candies on, load BF2 fast enough, with a few Virtual Machines online, Web server, etc.Originally Posted by aidanjt
I just happens to get hold of these sticks to play with. Going to sell these sticks fairly soon (together with another dozen of 512M sticks).

I have not installed it yet, but I heard that it takes loads of ram, and need a FAST system to run smoothly.
Anyway, 4G ram just for fun.

not sure why memtest not seeing all the ram would suggest that you need windows 64 to see all the ram ???
if memtest can't see all the ram could that be that the memory is faulty ? or that its a limit of the board/bios ?
If the bios can't see the ram what good is the OS going to do ?
plus memtest looks like it can actually see all the ram - and I'm assuming memtest is 32 bit
I don't remember seeing any 4 gig limitation of XP pro.
there is however a flag available in the boot.ini (/3gb) or something like that which allows more than 3 gig to be available to the OS

It is Inevitable.....
Memtest can sell all the ram (4G setting in BIOS)Originally Posted by ikonia
and it indeed test all the ram
But windows will only see 3.1G without PAE switch. Since I'm just TESTING 4G ram, don't know will the PAE switch cause problem when I use 1G ram (which I am also playing with)

re-read my post as I was editing while you responded, I wonder if the switch your talking about is the same one I mentioned
