Question good o/c skt 754 mobo required!

hi all, i have just bought a skt 754 2.8m chip. is this any good for overclocking? can anyone recommend a good o/c'ing motherboard? what about heatsink/fan that isn't too noisy (& preferably cheap!) have i made a big boob? as originally i wanted an xp2.5-2.8-m chip. how much poorer is the mobile sempron? i think i have bought?

I think the DFI LANPARTY UT 250gb supports the mobile chips with a BIOS update, although I'm not 100% certain. Grea OC'ing board.

As for heatsink and fan: XP-120 + a low noise fan

uhh... tough luck m8... semprons are pretty slow compared to their XP-M siblings. The performance gap is largely due to their ULTRA small L2 cache... 256KB... sheesh, what a joke..

Any decent ABIT or DFI board based on K8T800Pro or NForce3 250gb should work fine. 754 Semprons should benifit from the integrated memory controller... but dun expect a miracle..

The DFI 250GB is really the only decent option of 754.

This is, not to put too fine a point on it, crap. The smaller cache hardly affects the performance at all in most apps. In the vast majority of benchmarks a 128KB cache Sempron is within 10% of a 1MB cache A64 at the same clockspeed- often the difference is only 2-4%.

rich_225, there's no need to make three posts in a row. Just edit your original post if you want to add more information or ask more questions. If it's a Sempron 2800, then at actually runs at 1.6GHz AFAIK; with a multiplier of 8 it's probably going to be the board that limits your overclock but you may be able to get it to 2.4GHz or more. OCing is all down to luck really.

Socket 754 Sempron = downgraded A64 = good. It is not a throughbred-based sempron converted to S754 which would be bad.

And i have a DFI NF3 UT250 board and its superb, id definately recommend it.

ABIT NF8 is a very good overclocking 754 board too.

    I'd recommend the DFI TBH.

    That's a regular K8T800 chipset board not a Pro?
No AGP/PCI locks then so don't expect to achieve a very high system ref. clock.

    OK for £25 though.

Never seen a socket 754 mobuile sempron and I'm fairly sure thats becasue they don't exist.

I have used mobile A64s with these motherboards:

    AOpen AK89 MAX
    Chaintech VNF3-250
DFI NF3-250GB UT - probably the only one that will work with the rev E chips and it will need a recent BIOS.

Moble chips have no heatspreader, so you must take the height differentail into account when slecting/mounting a heatsink.

EDIT: Confirmed that mobile S754 semprons do exist.
