    Dell Mobile p4

So Dell stopped doing the mobile P4 about 6 months ago and I got one of the last.

I have to say that IMHO 4-6hours battery life is ok for a laptoop that is so sodding fast at everything.
So the question I have is... These M celeron things they are using now to extend the battery life (and costs), do ou rate them or would you rather have a processor with the mathmatical performance if a real P4?

Is your extra hour or so battery life worth it? (Guess it would be if your only a light user but I'm really after the power user answers...)

The Centrinos and Turions are quite a bit faster than a P4 (like 50% clock for clock), and even the Celeron-M is much faster than a P4. MHz does not equal power.

Battery life is better in the new lappys but that's not the reason to buy them. Their features (especially wireless implementations) are much better.

The Celeron M is much faster than a P4? I don't think so somehow. The Celeron M just incorporates technology which is handy for laptops to extend battery life and shut down devices which aren't being used. We all know how crap all Celerons are in comparison to the majority of CPU's.

The standard Centrino M is a damn decent CPU for a laptop though.

Clock for clock the Celeron M will destroy a P4 (in much the same way a Dothan does).

The Celeron-M is a Pentium-M with less cache.

How old is the P4 now, 4 years? 5 years? It's very old technology. The first P4s shipped in July 2001. They've improved a little here and there but they are basically the same. That's very old in computer terms.

BTW: There is no such thing as a Centrino-M. Centrino is the name of the laptop combination of the Pentium-M (or Celeron-M), the chipset and the wireless technology incorporated by Intel.

It's still designed to be mobile, that's what the M stands for

Intel want to replace P4's with Mobile CPU's, and their next generation of desktop CPU's should be good for Java programmers as they're developing new instruction sets to handle Java Byte code much better

They also wanted to sell laptops to people who didn't necessarily want to use them as a lap-warmer.
