    "CPU fan error" POST message

After fitting my xp-120 and Silenx 120mm quiet fan, using Arctic Silver 5, I switch on my PC.

    I get the message
    "CPU fan error
    Press F1 to continue"
just after it checked my RAM I think. I'm not a fan of things burning out, so my PC got switched straight off. Now, in the short time it was on, I did notice that the fan was spinning a little slow, or so it seemed. I checked the connections, and the fan and its connecting wire were both secure.

The xp-120 was a bastard to get onto my Asus AV8 Deluxe mobo, so I'm thinking it might be that, but I don't feel like taking it all out again, reapplying paste etc, if it's something simpler.

It's an AMD 64 3500+ if anyone needs to know, I've got details of anything else if needed.

Any help on this matter would be really appreciated.

does the bios tell you the RPM of the fan? Perhaps the RPM has dropped too low and it's setting off the alarm.. OR it's just SUPPOSED to be spinning low (it's a 120mm fan after all!) and you have the bios set to alert you when the fan spins below say, 3000rpm and the fan's at 2400rpm. Did you have an 120mm fan on there before? Is it a new machine? Both might mean it's just an alert that needs to be disabled/reconfigured in the bios.
In other words, the error might be erroneous

It's supposed to spin at 1,600 continuously, but you could be right, I did have some BIOS settings on my CPU fan before, when it was the stock cooler. Mainly so it slowed down, which, oddly, decreased temperature..

I'll check now, as soon as I've put it all back in

SilenX 120mm fans can spin as low as 1200rpm - that's easily enough to set off alarms on a bios looking for a 80mm fan spinning at might higher speeds..

Ok good luck - i'd sit in the bios and look at the cpu temps - if they don't climb to silly numbers (post 60C) then all is well and it's just a low limit rpm warning set wrong. If it's not configurable then just disable the alarm.

Lol, you were right I think, gonna have to trust me when I say that at the time I went into the BIOS, the fan was spinning at about 802RPM =o heh. Now it's at around 1,220RPM and my CPU temp's still dropping at 29C .

I disabled the setting I said I had enabled for my old cooler, but it's not done much, lol. Cheers dangel

Cool Glad you got it sorted! It's always the simple things isn't it?
