You cant honestly expect developtment to slow down to the pace of the slowest uptakers.. sometimes we just gotta move along (I had to scrap my 9800AIW for a poorly 6600GT (which i again scrapped after a couple months dissappointed use)

I know I just switched from an ASUS NF4 SLI/AMD 3500+ to an intel dual core platform, only to find i had to replace my perfectly good 2GB DDR Ram (Geil Ultra-X, which i spent ~£400 on) for 2GB DDR2 (Another £400 on corsairs 8000ul).

But even after these pointless upgrades, I could never demand anything else coz it woz my choice to switch afterall..

I think they should release a dual slot motherboard and how about a zif adaptor so you could plug a athlon in to a 64bit motherboard then you could upgrade in stages.
It must be possible to do this?

an interesting topic, and some good points made,

I just upgraded my system to what most people would say is a dated system, Athlon 64 3000 + AV8-3rd Eye board with a Radeon 9700 and 1Gb Ram. I would have loved to have x2'd and SLI'd but the costs were too steap. When I go out to fix peoples computers I would hate to say to someone, sorry I have to replace the mobo, cpu,GFX and probably PSU because your kit is dated and you can't buy replacemnt kit no longer.

I know this is far fetched as you can still buy older cards, but hopefully you can see my point, the PC market is generally not very backward compatable.

I see why companies are going PCIe only, it makes sence, push the newer and at times cheaper tech and phase out the old, but it does mean constant expense. But money drievs the market not sense

Well, the afore-mentioned ASROCK dual sata-2 motherboard that allows great AGP or PCIe operation has a socket upgrade path that will allow you to use AMD's next gen (m2) socket apparently (via daughter board).

I think they also (maybe along with gigabyte) do a motherboard with both a 754 and 939 socket. So the choice is out there if you want the flexibilty.

I keep seeing this topic on just about every computer forum I visit.

Personally, I want to see the death of AGP as its old tech, and the sooner its gone, the better. Think i'll start a petition against AGP, who's with me?

It's a standard 939 socket. Have a look at some pictures for ideas about clearance with surrounding components, but I thought waterblocks generally took up less space than heatsinks.

To be honest, I would not buy a bleeding edge GFX card on AGP even if that option was available. Why? Because chances are, the upgrade afterward would be a new mobo/CPU, and those are going will include an PCI-E slot rather than an AGP slot. So unless I restrict myself by getting a mobo that support both format, I will have to sell off the old (but probably still good) GFX card to get a PCI-E version. And the depreciation of the card might be pretty significant, if other people then are also ready to shift away from AGP then.

I'm on the edge of the precipice as far as AGP vs PCI. I've got a socket 754 board and x800 pro. To make the jump (a sensible one) I'd have to go 939 (new mobo and cpu) and PCI graphics card - total approx £500 for a decent setup. Lot of wonga to shell out all at once, so I'll probably hang on for as long as I can. But if I want to play F.E.A.R. so it looks like it should the jump will need to be made.

what bothers me is the fact ati and nvidia have whacked up the price of 6900gt/x800xt etc just as the 7800gtx was released a 6800gt/x800xt pe could be had 4 about £200. Now they are about £270-300. If anythong the prices hould have gone down due to it bein old tech so it should be cheaper but due to the fact its more rare companies like to skank there customers. Another thing that gets me is the socket A sempron whats the point in it an athlon xp barton was better and they were about the same price b4 the xp kinda got phased out. they already had a budget cpu in the form of the duron why release another one.
