I run a pair of SATA HGST 7K250s for mass storage, decently fast and very quiet.
I have an atlas 15K II for speed. Fastest drive available AFAIK. And it's fast, like the proverbial off a shovel.

For decent reviews of HDDs hit www.storagereview.com rather than THG or such.

I've got some Atlas II's and i'm not a fan, too hot, too loud. Whilst that goes with the 15k rpm territory, its the seagates are better overall imo.

I found them pretty quiet (for a 15k anyway), of course nothing like a 7200rpm SATA disk for noise, but certainly not too bad. It's certainly a lot quieter and cooler than my old seagate 15k disk.

hmm, which gen was the cheater? MK II i found more silent, the MK I was useful for making custurd (shakes to mix it, and keeps it nice and warm).

I've also had an Atlas II fail. But it only took em 9 days to RMA.

SATA - got to be the WD Raptor 74GB - in general home use/games etc it leaves others standing.

Overall Seagate Cheetah 15K series - no competition (read lots on these - but I cant justify the cost) - the new IBM/Hitachi (whatever) looks good though - wouldn't like to speculate on reliability though :/

Nice thing about scsi disks - 5 year warranty on all.

IBM got a bad rep for their deathstars, but most HD manufacturers have had a bad rep at some point in time, WD, fujitsu and maxtor certainly.

The only brands I can't recall a large scale widely known problem with have been Seagate and Hitachi. Not really too sure what the IBM/Hitachi relationship is, are they making IBM spec drives and selling them themselves or what?

Ultimately, unless you get caught in a bad batch of drives, you stand as much chance at loosing all your data as the next manufacturer - I don't think anyone is making particularly bad drives at the moment - they all have 3-5 yr warranties. And are these 'enterprise class' 24x7 drives (Maxline etc) made with (much) better components? When they only cost £5-10 more, and would that even cover the additional 2 years of warranty...?

Segate has no competition for 3rd place Firmly beaten by the Fujitsu MAU and Maxtor Atlas II series - unless they have released a new one since the 15k4?

    7 year on my seagates

Yeh the first gens were fast, but woh did they shake things up, i had one come loose from all 4 screws ops:

As people don't trust IBM for the deathstars, i don't trust fujitsu for their massive recall.

As to the storage review link, my atlas II's are only 73gig, but they do make a LOT more heat, i have to keep the HDD fan on for them, or else they get hotter than the xeons in that box :jawdrop: I tend to take those reviews with a pinch of salt!

I benched a slight favour for the maxtors in my box, but they are on channel A where as the seagates are on channel B, which might make a difference (as the difference was so slight!).

But anyway, would any of us SCSI converts go for WD Raptor drives, i for one wouldn't (I have actually had some for a fortnight, was very un-impresesd, as my 10k.5 seagate was better all round, temp, sound, performance).

I did, via IDE raid first. Still got scsi bits knocking around though, keep staring at them wondering if i've got enough to put a novel server together, just missing a case I think.

Interesting, shows both the MAU and Atlas II as being quieter than the 15k4, as well as faster.

No, they're not fast enough to fill my scsi spot, and not cheap/quiet/big enough to fill my SATA spot.
