    Opteron s939 146 or 3200+ Venice

I am looking to build a HTPC based on the Silverstone LC11-m case, looking to put the new Asus A8N-VM CSM board in (if someone stocks it soon)

Anyone got any views on whether a Opteron up 146 or 3200+ san diego would be best in this system. I'm thinking in terms of heat, noise etc.

    cheers

3200+ san diego!??! U mean 3200+ Venice... Other than Opterons, I don't think AMD has anything in their single core 939 below 2.4Ghz that runs 1MB cache..
    Me want Ultrabook

3200+ Venice, you are of course correct!

The 1mb cache is a big bonus. Just need to see how good the A8N-VM CSM will be at overclocking...

Edit : edited title so I don't look so dumb!!

Might wanna keep an eye out for our Opteron thread. So far i came to conclude that Opteron loves voltage.

    Hey Hans,

Have you overclocked you 146? What have you got out of it?

What did you mean it loves voltage? its easy to overclock by increasing the voltage?

Some opterons love voltage - I've seen crazy cpuid posts with some opterons taking close to 1.8v!!! please please please santa let me get a nice stepping.

Theres a large thread (75 pages and growing) on extremesystems forums http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...1&page=1&pp=25

I wouldn't hold out too much hope for that. I read somewhere on xtremesystems that Europe is mainly getting the crappy overclocking later steppings and I've not seen any particularly impressive overclocks from the batch cpucity got either.

overclockers.co.uk list their Opterons as "E4 Stepping ideal for overclocking".

Does this mean they think they're getting a good batch?

nearly all the 144 and 146 CABGE steppings I've seen have hit 300fsb.

The CABNE 144's have gone very high some at 350fsb. I would be happey to get a 146 running at 10x 300 for a 3ghz cpu with 1mb cache for £100.

I think all of this batch coming into the UK will be "E4 stepping"

yeah but at what multi were they running??? Most CABGE I've seen dont' seem to go much above 2.6/2.7ghz. Agreed early week CABNE's are much better but I doubt we'll see them over here.

    300 x 9 = 2700mhz on a 144 CABGE cpu. All I'm hoping for is 10 x 300 on my 146 then I'll be happy. We may even get unseen steppings.
