    Tecra 8000 HDD upgrade problem

I have an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop. It came with a measley 4GB Toshiba hard drive. I bought a nice shiny new 40GB Toshiba hard drive. When I remove the 4GB drive & plug in the 40GB drive, it isn't recognised - the BIOS reads that there is no hard drive attached, although there is & the drive spins up (I can hear/feel it spin).

I have updated the BIOS to the latest possible version direct from the Toshiba website.

Whilst searching around on the web I have found multiple instances of people with T8000s with larger drives, from all sorts of manufacturers.

Anybody got any ideas whats wrong? I've only got the drive for 7 days until my right to cancel & send it back to Scan for a refund times out.

EDIT; seems it might just be a dead drive, because it isn't registered in either my Dad's Satellite 4060CDT or Tecra 9000.
