that would be 6 drives in total then - you just specced 4 - I agree with you just think it might go over budgetOriginally posted by Bindibadgi
Well youve got 2 more p// ATA ports use your own noggin 4x 120gig disks?

Regarding the hard disk subsystem, I'd think twice about what configuration you're gonna go for.
If you want 4x120GB hard disks to give you 240GB total space, that would imply a Raid 0+1 config.
If you go for a Raid 0+1 config, you need to have at least 4 IDE ports. If you have just two ports and put all for drives on those two ports using both master and slave positions, you'd be defeating the point of having a striped raid array because the speed gained by Raid 0 would be lost in writing to both master and slave device simultaneously.
I think you'd be better off with a 4 channel P-ATA device such as the HighPoint RocketRAID 404 so each harddrive can be alone on its interface port. http://www.highpoint-tech.com/rr404.htm
Promise Technology offer the FastTrak TX4000 http://www.promise.com/product/produ...104&familyId=2 .
If you go down the S-ATA route, then you'd need a HighPoint Rocket RAID 1540 http://www.highpoint-tech.com/rr1540.htm or a Promise FastTrak S150 TX4 http://www.promise.com/product/produ...108&familyId=2
Maybe I'm talking a load of bull**** but from my experience when I had three harddrives on my old KT7-A-Raid mobo, two of which were on the same ata interface, the speed performance was way below what I got when I changed it to a single drive per interface port.
Personally, I'd go for the S-ATA version. If you're gonna have four drives, the simpler and smaller cables, the better really. My PC was bad enough with three P-ATA harddrives
I dont care whatever.. does it matter? stick whatever sodding drives you want in it /me throws 121meg IDE drive at you.
I dont like sig pics so i turn off sigs Which doesnt help when i dont know what ive written here! DOH!
/me catches drive and says "cheers, Bindi"Originally posted by Bindibadgi

Can I use it as a LS120 if I cut a slot in it ?Originally posted by Bindibadgi

Without knowing the size of the database and the number of tables/complexity of the schema it's impossible to say innit?
You might be alright with a p-600!

I'm telling you now its going to need a fair bit of processing power to get the info on there, and its likely to be picked at by something like Crystal reports.
The Xeon boards i've looked at have got very good raid controllers on them, and i've put in the request for the funds to accounts. So hopefully i'll soon let you know what gets purchased.

You could use RAID 5 for better performance under heavy load?
/me shuts up now

How about you read the thread and then answer yourself?
I do say why i don't use raid 5.
Thanks

You really are a GiT, TiG, but I'll let you off seeing as you have a Pr3d80r quote in your sigOriginally posted by TiG

Backwards GiT you mean don't you Blacksheep?.

But what size is the DB going to be? How many tables will it be?Originally posted by TiG

running win2k Server or adv server, sql server 2k enterprise maybe 60 tables, and its likely to be 240GB within a year. But this is a dev server to prove concept. Prior to buying a live server up to full spec to take this on long term.

GENERIC RAM IN A MISSION CRITICAL SERVER?
I know NOTHING......but that scares me....
Surely 4 sticks of Crucial PC2700 ECC would do the job.... http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/Part...72Z335&cat=RAM
