I can't see any reason why not, or anything more suited for cleaning around nooks and crannies of chips.

Ok, so it looks like I will be getting the following:

    Akasa TIM Clean
    Cotton Buds
    Bounty Kitchen Roll
    Steady Hands

    Is that about right?

yea, that looks good enough, you might have to add a toothbrush to that list if your 7800GT package looks anything like my 9600XT did when I removed the heatsink. It was smothered with silver paste, and caches and other tracers got covered as well.

    Do this-

Make sure you DO NOT work on carpet or anything like that. Static could destroy your card.

Take off the cooler and use TIM clean or Arti Clean to clean off the gunk. Use a q-tip to apply the cleaning material and use tissue (lint free tissue) to wipe it off. The artic coolers come pre-installed with thermal paste?

If not use AS5. Apply a little bit!

No, a tinnyyyyyy bit. I only needed a dot on my 9600XT, if you could call it a dot and it spread out right over the whole surface perfectly.

Nail varnish remover often contains acetone which will eat plastic so beware.

I use isopropyl alchohol (from work) with soft tissues and a tooth brush (your gums are much softer than plastic!) to remove thermal paste. Cotton buds seem like a good idea too.

Indeed, don't do it on carpet, although that is obvious, there's always someone out there who does those type's of things . I find doing it on a page or two of A4 on a desk works well. Stop’s you making a mess or losing screws.

I wouldn't use the gunk they put on there, but that’s personal preference. I used Artic Silver Ceramique on my 7800GT, it works well. Or you could use Artic Silver 5. Either way just a very small rice size blob in the middle of the core, the pressure should give you a nice thin circle of thermal compound.

Will using Arctic silver 5 instead of the the pre-applied thermal compund make that much of a difference?

It will take off 2 or 3 degrees. Not a massive amount but some none the less.

Well if you have AS5 already I'd use it, the difference might not be much but every little helps. The pre-applied stuff is normally too thick and is much like the stuff you get on the Intel/AMD stock HSF's.

My AS cooler came with a little tube of compound, but it seemed all dry and i couldnt spread it properly, so i used the akasa stuff i got for my cpu. I then read on the website it was supposed to be dry like that but i could still not spread it properly and so i would just use some normal cpu stuff, AS5 is perfect!

When I got my Radeon 9600XT it had a stupid tiny cooler, less than 40mm in diamitter, and had a ton of silver 'gunk' underneath it, and the temps were 50C *idle*.. I got a Zalman beast, some Artic Silver 5, used it for the entire assembily (including the heatpipes) and now the GPU is 30C idle..

If I had of used the white 'OEM' junk that came with the Zalman I'm betting I would see 35C temps instead.. If you're doing overclocking those 5 degrees can make all the difference.

I wouldn't use anything that strong, besides white spirit leaves an oily residue on everything.

I favour isopropyl alcohol myself (from maplin), though acetone (nail varnish remover) works about as well.
