Shuttle (Micro?) Mobo Into Full Size Case... ?

    Hi

I'm planning on buying a new case, possibly a Coolermaster Wavemaster in Yellow , or something nice like that.

I'm happy with the components at the moment, so just want to move everything over from the Shuttle SN41G2 into the new case. (Though I'd buy a new PSU)

Question. Do full size cases provide all the holes/fittings in the right places for a small motherboard?

    Thank you

    Mike

In the case specifications it should state which motherboard formfactors it supports.

I **think** that the Shuttle boards use non-standard fittings (e.g. screw positions), such that they don't conform to the ATX or microATX specs...

I may be wrong though. TBH, you may be better doing what I did and just buy a full size NForce2 mobo and transfer it (my NF7-S cost £30 s/hand), then sell the Shuttle whole (although I haven't got round to selling mine yet...). As it's the same chipset there should be no problems with Windows or other software.

    Hi again

I've done a little research and found the FlexATX specificatons here

    It says:

To mount a FlexATX motherboard in an ATX 2.03 compliant chassis, two new mounting holes are required in the chassis, holes B and S. However ATX motherboards do not use these mounting holes, and the removable mounting standoffs must be removed before an ATX board is placed back into the chassis.
The PDF has a diagram showing where holes B & S need to be, and shows exactly where they should be drilled in relation to the other holes, distance wise. The other mounting holes are all lined up.

    This site however says

The FlexATX form factor is backwards compatible with both the ATX and micro-ATX specifications - use of the same motherboard mounting holes as both of its predecessors avoids the need to retool existing chassis.
So from that, I guess if there are not all ready the extra 2 mounts added there for FlexATX compliance, then it will be very easy to add them...

If anyone could give their thoughts on this in light of this new information I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks

Like I said check out the individial cases specs, my Gigabyte 3D Aurora supports Flex-Atx (according to the manual) as well as having great cooling.

    Thanks Raven

The Coolermaster cases I've looked at have only said either ATX or Micro ATX - they haven't specifically said Flex. I've emailed them to ask now though.

    Cheers

i woudlnt guarentee that shuttle use flexatx - i thought they used their own form factor.. definatley double check. also be careful of airflow requirements for the case.. i'm not sure how that ice thing works, but i think it needs support from the side of the chassis

if i were you, i'd buy a new mobo as well and sell the old shuttle complete - you'll end up with more expandability and probably a bit of spare cash..

If you want soemthing that looks nice, how about the cubit chassis that scan sells? the 5 is a replacement case for most shuttles.

    Thanks for the latest replies.

My graphics and CPU are watercooled so mounting the fan won't be a problem. I would sell the Shuttle but I've cut the case up quite a bit for mods to fit things in and it isn't too pretty lol.

I've gone for the Coolermaster Cavalier 3. If the mobo doesn't fit then I will buy a new mobo and probably move the existing Shuttle into the attic to replace my dieing notebook which is currently acting as my mini download/ file server

    Cheers

Just a quick update, for reference in case anyone is in a similar situation.

The board did not fit, I thought I could have made some new holes to mount it on, but I had overlooked something more important than the mounting holes - that is the location of the sockets/ etc etc and how they do not line up very nicely with the case's slot.

Not a problem - I have gone for the Abit AN7, which I understand is a small update to the NF7? Best part was it was only approx £23 inc vat and delivery, and new
