My mate dropped his Toshiba laptop and it won't switch on. The powerl ights come on, but there is nothing on the screen and the fan doesnt work. Chances are that the hard disk is damaged too, but is there a way of removing it, and connecting it to a PC?

you'll be needing a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter to connect the drive up to your desktop PC as a slave. As for removal - google for a service manual for the particular model as removal methods and drive locations on laptops vary quite a lot.

Alternatively, you might be able to find some sort of convertor cable. Not sure from where though or precisely what type is required.
got a converter thing off ebay for £4. Not tired it yet though....

they're not really converters anyway - the laptop drives just have a more compact pin layout, so the adapter is needed to make the pin layout bigger and to split off the power pins - it's not doing anything fancy or electronic.
You could also get a USB external laptop caddy from ebay. Just stick the drive in that and plug it into your desktop.
