No, don't touch them. Ive had one start to smoke on me before, and somone in this thread has had one set on fire ?
If you *must* get a non branded one, avoid Q-tec.

yep, black smoke poured out of the case and in the couple of seconds it took to yank the plug out of the wall it killed most of the components.

I remember reading one guys post on a newsgroup, who bought a system and qtec psu off of ebuyer - whole lot worked once and then died - he rigged the psu up to a old PII board and stuck a Multimeter over the different lines. Turned out the psu was spiking the 5v line to 14v for about 1/2 a second during shutdown....

Wether it's true or not I'm not sure - newsgroups can be deceptive, but my own experience with Qtecs, and friends that have bought Qtecs has been consistantly bad. My PSU on a loaded system used to give 11.2v on 12v and 4.8 on the 5 (3 was a /reasonable/ 3.38). Same system on the Antec gives 12.04v 4.98v and 3.31v.

I've beening running overclocked P4's on my Skyhawk 300W for 1.5+ years now. Started out with a 1.6a@2.4, then a 2.53@3.05, now a 2.4C@3.6Ghz and it seems to be handling them all well.

Now granted I dont have a completely loaded computer. (1 CDRW, 1 DVD+RW, 1 40GB HD, Audigy, FX5900, Netgear NIC, 4 case fans, 1 red neon)

Yep thats a very good reason not to risk a cheap PSU they can make one hell of a mess of the rest of the components, more often that not taking eveything down connected to them.

I have a true blue here next to me in a machine im building for somone. They allready had the PSU or i would have brought a cheaper one, as i think the main selling point is the blue light fans.

It has some nice fetures though like fan headers inside that make the fans slower to cut down and noise, and a molox connector on the back of the PSU. Voltages are also rock solid.

Good PSU, but you can get the same performace at a less price - this is more of a geeks PSU

On a slightly related point (maybe someone can answer this), would spikes in the AC supply have a serious adverse effect on a PSU, assuming a number of them over a period of time?

Come to think of it, I wonder how 'clean' most people's AC mains supply is in the UK....

I have also heard that they are excellent PSU's, you may want to do some searching and find a few reviews though.

PriestJN - Always, always have your computer plugged into a surge supressor. I wouldn't dream of running a computer without one. Especially since I blew 5 light bulbs this week, and have seen a computer get killed by a spike (back when I was in a university hall - very dodgy power in those).

    Dunno which to get tbh....

The one thing that puts me off a lot of the psu's is the size of the cables....there just too dam long......but 61+pnp for basicly a antec psu....might just have won it for me
