Question Shuttle ST61G4 RAM Problem - Help?

    Hi all,
I have a Shuttle ST61G4 which has been running fine for the last year or so. I thought I would upgrade the RAM as I was putting an order in at ebuyer anyway. Opened up the Shuttle case and took note that the RAM I had installed when I built it was Corsair Value Select (512MB). I then took the effort of tracking down a 1GB stick which was also "Corsair Value Select" thinking I would help avoid any problems. Not so it would appear:

512 in DIMM slot 1 - Fine, posts 512 (my initial configuration)
1GB in DIMM 1, 512 in DIMM 2 - posts 1GB only (my modified configuration)

    1GB in DIMM 1 - posts 1GB
1GB in DIMM 2 - posts 1GB sometimes, other times blank

    512 in DIMM 1 - posts 512 sometimes
512 in DIMM 2 - again, posts 512 some of the time

    512 in DIMM 1, 1GB in DIMM 2 - doesn't post at all.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Not that this helps much but I had no end of stability trouble with the ST61G4 and the bulk of the problems where related to ram. It is a very fussy box to say the least.

As a rule (based on the 3 I have had)…

    • They do not like single DIMMS much but often work well enough from new in that setup if you do not put a second DIMM in. No idea why.
    • They 'hate' mixed DIMMS so putting 2 non-matching (i.e. different sizes and timings) DIMMS in is a highway to nowhere.
    • They seem very stable with some sets of matching DIMMS, not all mind you, I had success with all 3 when using matched pairs of Hynix 256MB value DIMMS.

Yep I am - unfortunately it looks like it just doesn't like unmatched RAM! Oh well

Thanks for the help DJWillis - seems to fit with my experience!
