    Sound card has stopped working

Since this morning my sound hasn't being working for some strange reason.

Did all the usual to check it hadn't been muted and such - but I couldn't change any of the settings. So I uninstalled all the drivers, and installed the new ones - it worked again, but I didn't reboot even though it asked me. So later on I rebooted and it stopped working again. And so now I can't even seem to find an uninstaller to uninstall them, and my sound card is just kept being detected as 'Multimedia Audio Controller' (I've gone to Add New Hardware and it just sticks on the searching for drivers screen).

I've also tried removing things in Device Manager which hasn't helped either.

Oh, and I also tried booting into Knopix - iirc sound usually worked using the Live CD and it doesn't now... which looks to me like something could be physically wrong on the hardware side...

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Hmm. I installed NOD32 last night - I just uninstalled it now and it works fine.

    Wonder why that happens.

Overwrites driver files? Resource conflict? Gremlins at work?

Are you the same XA04 that used to post over at PCPer? It's kind of quiet over there these days...
