URGENT Help Needed Regarding New PSU 4-Pin Plug

    Hi all,

Something of a dilemma here, I have just taken delivery of a new Hiper 580 Watt PSU, but after having a look at it, I have a bit of a problem. Look at my signature and you can see that I have a Asrock Dual Sata II mobo, coupled with an Opteron. On the motherboard itself, there is a standard 20-pin connector, which is easy to identify, but there is also a 4 pin connector on the board also.

However, there are TWO different 4-pin sockets on the PSU. One is on its own separate cable, whilst the other is part of the same cable connecting the 20-pin lead to the PSU. I used to have just the one 4-pin cable on my generic old eBuyer PSU so I just plugged it in and it seems to have done no damage. I need to know if:

    1) Do I need to have anything plugged into the 4-pin socket AT ALL??? What is its purpose???
    2) Which one do I need to use (description above)

In the documentation provided, the 4-pin cable on its own is labeled [P4] and has the following on the 4 pins:
    - COM (Black)
    - COM (Black)
    - +12V2DC (Yellow)
    - +12V2DC (Yellow)

Whilst the cable attached to the 20-pin cable has the following:
    - +12V1 (Yellow)
    - +3.3V (Orange)
    - +5V (Red)
    - COM (Black

I know about most hardware, but with PSUs, voltages and rails then I don’t really have too much of a clue.
I need to install this PSU tonight when I get back from work as I need it for the X1800XT 512 that came in the same delivery!!! 
But obviously, I don’t want to fry my motherboard by plugging in something wrong!!!

Any help would be really, really helpful!!!

you want to use the 4-pin cable that's on it's own.

The 4-pin cable that is attached to the 20-pin atx one is meant for 24-pin motherbards.

Right, thanks for that. Also, what is this for - after looking at the voltages on the wires, does it just mean that it i will get a second 12v rail (dont know if i even need one, but just wondering)

Can anyone confirm the solution (not that i dont believe you mate) but i want to be absolutley sure before i do anything and kill my mobo

Use the separated 4 pin (black and yellow wires) in the 4 pin socket. This is a +12V line for your CPU mainly.
The orange...etc 4pin that you describe is, as ash mentions, meant to attach to the 20 pin connector to plug into 24 pin motherboards, which are becoming the standard nowadays.
