    Dilemma

I recently started a thread here asking about PC specs, to which people were very helpful .

I had the spec sheet and cash ready, however, everybodys been raving about conroe, and this is where my dilemma lies.

Do I wait and get a conroe system with its massivley expensive motherboards (three times what i was going to pay) or do i go with AM2 seeing as its going to have to have its prices slashed to compete (i still think DDR2 is much more expensive than DDR???) or do i got for the super budget option of going socket 939.

I'm in a total muddle with all of this at the moment, as you can see from my sig my PC is getting on a bit, and i just want another that will last me 2/3 years without upgrading .

Please give me some advice to put my mind at ease.

    Cheers Craig

I can't really help, cos I'm in the exact same position atm.

I think I'm gonna go with either a Pentium D or a AM2 x2 when Conroe comes out. Just because the demand for conroe will be so high that Intel won't be able to supply it, and I don't want to wait till the first wave of demand for conroe subsides.
The uprgrading thing is exactly the dillema I'm in, I'm not sure whether AM2 is future proof enough, alhtought I think I might upgrade again next year if I have the money then.

Sorry for not really helping you at all. lol. but thats what i'm thinking atm.
You've got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?

I'd personally wait, but not for much longer than a month.

    Hi,

I'm in a similar position, however I've already ordered the parts to build a new Pentium D system built around the Intel Bad Axe Mobo but the order has still not shipped due the CPU being like gold dust at the moment (965 Extreme).

The lead time on my CPU keeps getting closer and closer to Conroe, if only Scan had them available for pre-order I'd have swapped the CPU over and just waited for the Core 2 Extreme CPU instead.

    exact same position spazman.
I believe with what happens with the new stuff, its a good idea to wait a bit after its release (wait till the dust settles like some people have referred to it ). I was meant to buy a new PC in July but once I found out the date of Conroe release I decided I have to wait; and give my trigger cash finger a suspension! With other factors like Vista coming in 2007 sometime? (pretty sure I wont use that at least 3 years after its release - simply because I don't like M$ enough to get their new stuff) and DX10 - which may be more to do with GFX cards. Things will change - prices will drop and true bang for buck CPU's will be revealed!

Anyone who's thinking of going conroe and *NEED* a new system now should go with the PD 805, it's cheap, fairly powerful, good overclocker, just make sure your motherboard has a 965 or a 975 chipset.
