need help with noisy cpu fan

    hello again people

i am in the final stages of building a htpc for my living room but i want to make the cpu fan quieter!

    i have got a
    asrock k7s41gx motherboard
    xp 1800+ cpu
    akasa ak827

i looked in the bios and there is no option to slow the fan down, i also tried using speedfan but it does not make a difference
so i had a look through my box of bits and found a 80mm akasa amber fan so i thought i would swap the standard cpu fan to this one but it runs at 4500rpm i am sure its meant to run at 1800rpm and its even louder than the normal fan which only runs at 2400rpm!

any ideas what i can do?

If I were you, and you're sure that you setup speedfan right, to no avail, would be to use a Zalman FanMate or something to slow the fan down manually.

You can try undervolting/underclocking the CPU too, so that you can reduce the fan speed even more, without increasing the CPU temp to dangerously high levels

i am positive i setup speedfan right and i dont really fancy underclocking it!

if i cant think of anything else i guess i will have to go down the fanmate route

Theres a thing called a 7v fan mod google it, very useful you can run you fan at 12v 7v or even 5v and the mod it self is very simple and i've done it with some of man fans

I'd probably try a 5 volt mod personally. Then again I tend to run practically all my fans at 5v. At the moment I am running an XP 2600+ without a fan on it, simply ducted to the rear 120mm fan (on 5v). Runs fine. Lemme know if i can help further.

i have done a 7v mod before i have still got the resistor here somewhere but it was only on a two wire fan and also the fan was plugged into the psu not the motherboard!

if i 7v mod the cpu fan is it still ok to plug it into the motherboard header and to you think it will still cool the cpu enough its running at the standard 1533mhz and it runs normally about 45-50 degC!

Hmm, 45-50 idle sounds quite high, I'm surprised (got any other socket A heatsinks around?), I wouldn't want too go much higher, stock it should be ok anything up to about 60 load (as far as i remember).
I'm afraid I've never tried 7v mod off the motherboard, I don't really like the 7v mod at the best of times

O ye and do u have the option to lower the vcore in bios?

If the cpu is running at that temp currently then I wouldn't recommend running the fan at a lower voltage. You could get a fanmate and then test at different voltages where as with volt mod you may find out it doesn't cool well enough.

If you're unable to undervolt the processor whilst keeping same speed then maybe a better heatsink coupled with the fanmate and one of the fans you already have?

ok i cant find a way to lower the vcore

and i just run occt on it and the temps did not go over 50degC with the cpu at 100% load for 30mins!

    and its about 39/40degC idle!

you could always plug the fan into one of them single fan controllers?? or maybe chnage the cooler itself if it to noisy and cant cool your processor if u turn it down.
