You would need some DDR2 memory.

AMD aint over. Its just skt939. Stopped making boards and CPU's now, both single core and dual core.

AM2 is pretty much still alive and well. Its just been over shadowed by the Conroe crazy. Apart from getting an FX62 its slower than the Conroe platform but still ok. Conroe would be a better buy though.

AMD might have something to say when they start producing 65nm cpu's though. Time will tell. AMD are not out of the market just yet. Intel have the upper hand atm and by the looks of things for a while till AMD come up with something special.

Conroe atm is the sensible buy. You will must be mad not to get one if your planning on upgrading at this moment in time.

ok then, you have me sold. if i can find a a CPU, memory and a MOBO for under 300 ill go for it.

Every comparison i can find on the AMDs and Intels backs up what most of you are saying, the Intels come out on top time and time again.

Now i just need to try and hunt down a suitable mobo & memory, does anyone have any recommendations for anything suitable, budgeting around £140-150 for the two?

thanks for the advice guys, appriciate it all.

Intel makes perfect hacksaw to saw off ppl's arms and legs.. .. no pun intended..

Anyhow, C2D is probably the best way forward if you're building one from scratch.. just wish their boards were a little more affordable...

Personally I am looking at this as a crossover board on a budget.

Has 20 pin ATX and AGP and can take DDR ram..............other than it's limited overclocking ability it seems an ideal Intel board to start with.

The price is good so it would make upgrading to a newer/better board late on less of a hit to the wallet.

Needs bios update to support the E6300 though.

Well if your looking at a board, cpu and memory combo for under £300 then that Asrock board would suit the bill fine. It will start you off till you get chance to buy a better board.

    E6300 OEM - £135
    Asrock board - £36
    2x 1GB Corsair Value 5400 - £120
    Scythe Ninja Plus w/ 120mm fan - £30

    Total - £321

Thats probably the best you can for your budget to start off on.

That Asrock board is allegedly a bit dodgy for core 2 duo, once the nforce chips come out then we will see some proper competiton.

Just because Conroe is really quick and all doesn't make X2 any less quick than when it was competing against Pentium D, that said I think Conroe is the way forward unless you are really on a budget . I.e cheap mobo/RAM and can still only get in an X2 3800 or possibly 4200.

any advice on what to change it to? I dont want to go much higher then that price, but it is on pre-order and im waiting for scan to get back to me in terms of a date.

edit: didnt read web site properly.

id like to point out again that this time last week id never even heard of intel's new duel core, id always prefered AMD. This goes for the mobo supporting intel aswell, hence all the questions and requests for advice.
