The CPU fan may indeed be nearly double the price, but we're not talking about £100 vs £200 are we? Trust me, £7 to buy quiet is worth it.
As for the Samsung hard drives, I bought a Maxtor with 16meg cache and whilst it is reasonably fast it is a little more audible than the samsung spinpoints i since bought for other people. Both drives are 'fast'. It won't in truth make a huge difference and is not worth agonising over, but given a choice I would now buy Samsung Spinpoints and nothing but.

PS regarding 'value' RAM, it is correct the the absolute cheapest RAM will shave a few quid off, but once again the difference in potential reliability and headaches from undiagnosed 'issues' (ie my computer keeps rebooting - i wonder why) is just not worth it.
Always buy branded RAM, my experience has always been excellent with Crucial and Corsair, hence my suggestion that you keep your original quoted RAM.

I'd have to agree with MSIC,

Buy the Arctic Cooler...you won't be disappointed .
I'd probably say the same about the HDs...I've got 4 Spinpoints and 1 Maxtor DM10 16MB...the Spinpoints are faster, and quieter in what I use them for.

I'd be tempted just to go with the slightly more expensive RAM, just because it's not a huge difference...it comes with heatspreaders...which isn't going to make any difference to heat levels, but does make it easier to handle.

...Just to sway you over a little more

OK. Here's version 2 of my shopping basket:

Does anyone have any opinions on the DVD-RAM option suggested by vicar? (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=408896)

Looks good. I'm not a fan of onboard graphics, but that's my personal opinion. Now, go and spend money.

Stick with either that DVD drive, or a NEC.
I personally prefer NEC drives, but your splitting hairs whichever one you go for

OK. Just ordered it. The mobo, CPU and case were all on 'today only' discount so it came in at £368.68

Now off to order my Linux distro DVD.

    Thanks for your advice everyone.

QUOTE=DerbyJon]Is the main gain of that product DVD RAM? Is that worth having?
Also why the concern over whether it may fit, is it a non-standard size?

There is no harm in having DVD Ram it's just an added bonus and it might come in useful. There is no concern over whether it will fit as the drive itself is smaller than most optical drives, and will sit well in most if not all SFF.

Due to be delivered tomorrow but my order was still showing as not picked. Phoned Scan, the mobo and cooler are out of stock and the optical drive is discontinued. Everything was showing as in-stock when I placed the order.

Looks like I'm not building my PC tomorrow night.

    Switched to this optical drive:
Samsung SH-S162A/BEBN Black 16x16 & -RAM ±R Dual Layer DVDRW Writer OEM UK
Couple of quid more than the old one but that seemed to be the last of the cheapies.

The mobo and cooler are still showing as in-stock on the website. But they're not. Hopeful ETA is next week now.
