Its just not possible to have more than that on an IDE cable, check you bios, it will only have options for 2 drives per channel.

SCSI you can have more than 2 devices on a ribbon cable, in fact up to 8 or 16 on the more common SCSI variances..... Loads more on the newer SCSI standards.
