IDE configurations on a Sata board

I just assembled my new system using the Asus PB5 deluxe mobo and one IDE Thoshiba hard disk.

First i had some trouble to have the hard disk detected, after that the first time i tried to format the stupid thing it crashed half the way, tried once again and it worked but it took ages...

Windows installed easily but once i started to install drivers or using the disk in some other way it became again very slow.

Finally i installed the drivers and restarted the pc but the windows was now dead and it never booted again!!!!

It seems to me that i need a need a new Hardrive but i don’t want to spend money till i am sure... I'm kind of new with these new sata configurations and I’m not sure if i have to do something on the bios in order to properly use IDE.
