Need advice on two motherboards:

1. Got a spare S939 AMD chip. Want a cheap, but decently specced 939 board. Stability is paramount, doesn't need SLI, or to be uber featured. Some mild OC is great as long as it's stable.

2. Conroe motherboard. Assuming single GPU of either description, what's a good, stable, feature rich board that will do a decent OC (not bleeding edge)? Are any new chipsets in the offing?

I can't help WRT 939 boards but...

A Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 is a great board for a good well-priced non-SLI/CrossFire Core2Duo board. It has good reviews for O/Cing as well. See this forum board for more suggestions on C2D boards:

Just bought the ASRock Dual PCIEx/AGP to do exactly this with an old A939 processor I've acquired. They're about 40 squid from Scan, but you will have to grab a gfx card for it - mentioned only as I personally have never have much joy with on-board graphics so avoid them like the plague

I use an Abit KN8-SLI S939 board, and I actually bought it not for the SLI (which I wasn't planning to use, but ended up using recently) but for the passive cooling system (the Ultra version has a northbridge fan, the SLI uses an OTES heatpipe system). Good board, and my 2GHz Opty 170 runs at 2.5GHz with temps around the 33 mark on idle, about 46-47 under load with a stock cooler. That said, Scan aren't listing them as in stock at the moment.

The Via K8T890 chipset is supposed to be very capable, so THIS might be very suitable for your requirements. The thought occurs, however, that I don't know whether you'll need a graphics card, don't care that much about graphics or already have one.

Personally, I've done OK with onboard graphics from bothe ATI and Nvidia.

ASRock Dual Sata2 939. Good for OCing as long as you don't need to increase the Vcore on the AMD chip.

2. Conroe motherboard. Assuming single GPU of either description, what's a good, stable, feature rich board that will do a decent OC (not bleeding edge)? Are any new chipsets in the offing?

For now it will have a 6800GT PCI-E in it, but having an AGP option might be useful in a while, as I will have a spare Asus A8N-SLI for the 6800. The AsRock dual AGP/PCI-E appears to be permanently out of stock at Scan.

I'm not sure about the differences of the DS3 and the DS4. Think the heatpipes can help cool the chipset which can get pretty hot when O/Cing. I do know that the DS4 is more expensive and so was out of my budget!

This Asrock939DUAL-VSTA is the one I picked up from Scan just last week. However, they did have it on Today Only so it's prob just sold out rather than unavailable.

That's not the one I was talking about, which has a ULI chipset not SIS. Shame if it's out of stock though, it is a popular and good board with good fsb based overclocking (earlier bios's could only get to 274 though).

abpeacock, are you saying that the DS4, which has the silentpipe, has limited OC. That wouldn't seem to make sense (not the first time mind you).

Sorry Thorsson, I was saying that the ASRock board had limited O/C, the Gigabyte boards have plenty of options to play with, see this forum for more information on O/C Gigabyte Core2Duo boards:
