The one thing that looks wrong to me is the first setting, in the last picture of your first post....

The "PCM 24bit" output option......what else is selectable under that?

And are you trying to play a DD5.1 or DTS signal? As you dont have DTS selected for passthrough currently.
Thanks shaithis. I'm using a variety of sources direct from the hard disk. .ts, .mkv, hd xvid encoded with dd5.1 rather than DTS.

I'll play with the setting you mention (after swmbo has finished with the TV). Options are PCM 16, 24, 32 and IEEE Float.

I spoke too soon about the new realtek driver. It's for HD audio only afaics.

yeah, a 10m RCA lead to the amp. The amp has leds that show which speakers are receiving a feed. Can only get it to show front left/right. I'm not relying on the leds but they're a reasonable guide. No sound coming out of rears/centre/sub/. The amp/speaker setup works fine with a 5.1 feed normally.

You've probably seen it already, but there's a good thread on the AC3filter SPDIF settings here. I would suggest turning 'AC3 Encoder' off (you don't want the filter to decode and re-encode the sound), check 'SPDIF Sample Rate' and set it to 48kHz, and check 'Disallow PCM output in SPDIF'. Set PCM 16bit in both AC3filter and your Realtek settings.

I'm starting to believe it's a Vista thing. I got a bit closer by using some nvidia drivers:-

...but it only worked on first launch and still says "spdif disabled", after that there was no audio at all in the AC3Filter mixer. Even when it said it was working, the Receiver still only had 2 channels.

Thanks for the help though and if anyone does get compressed/5.1 spdif to work under Vista then I'd be glad to hear about it.

    Cheers.
