It's not a null point at all, I'm pointing out that socket changes are a nessecity of electrical principles due to changing technology. It's not as if engineers sit swinging in their chairs all day and once every 5 months or so think "I know, lets invent a new socket to give ourselves something to do and so people will have to buy a new CPU when they want to get the latest and greatest motherboard for no apparent reason".

nah, the point about releasing AM2 chips for 939 sockets is null, because the 939 socket is incompatible with AM2, as its got the extra controller. that was perhaps a bad example, take the 754 and 939 sockets instead

No, it was exactly my point, socket changes are nessecery (im saying this again) because of incompatabilities between new motherboard components and CPUs.

Think if you check this relates to Mobile There are in effect 2 versions of Core2Duo Desktop & mobile
    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor

Mobile Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile ProcessorNote Package type = 478/479 pin.

See also the Mobile CPU Wars: Core 2 Duo vs. Core Duo
    see
    Page 3
    2007 Mobile Roadmap
By the end of this year you can expect a T5500 running at 1.66GHz for $209, but the rest of the new models won't appear until next year. In Q1 2007 Intel will introduce the first Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processors, the L7400 and L7200 at 1.5GHz and 1.33GHz respectively. In Q2 2007, Intel will introduce all of the 800MHz FSB Core 2 Duo parts, as well as the Ultra Low Voltage Core 2 Duo U7500.

The difference between the T5500P and the T5500 is that the former is a Socket-P part (Santa Rosa platform), while the latter is Socket-M (Napa platform).
    Desktop

As far as desktop core2duo a new chipset is due Bearlake & Intel roadmaps 1.3GHz DDR 3 chipsets
A look at Intel's upcoming movesas you can seee the bearlake will aslo support ddr3 which according to mobo manufacturers.

Have not seen any mention of socket change on desktop only on mobile.

    luck
