Came as a surprise to me but as ODDs become commodities how they could justify the size of the premium over NEC/Samsung etc. drives I don't know.

I agree, IMO they were overpriced.
this is sad,
Almost all my drives have been/are plextor and I've found them the most reliable, and simpley the best.
Dissapointed to lose a trusted brand.
It is Inevitable.....
yeh i thought they only existed for that niche corner of the market that wanted the best.
i guess there prices will tripple now !
Personally i think it is a shame. Always liked them. Guess i'll have to stick to Pioneer drives now.
Although it might be an idea to pick up a Plextor now before they all dissapear from inventory. hmmm....
Just shows what happens when you sell overpriced products, which show no extra benefits for the price against other cheaper brands.
Their SCSI drives were ground breaking and as mentioned in a thread about a week ago, the 40x SCSI cd drive was arguably the best ripper ever, but in recent times, their overpriced drives havent had any real benefit over the competition, which was often half the price.
