x64 (AMD64/EM64T) is an extention of the x86 instruction set - complete with new registers and instructions (and culling of some older instructions - still available in 32bit mode though):

the true inner geek would forgot vista and learn linux dual booting with xp if anything went wrong.
xp support is extended intill 2012 now i think.
so its time to forgot vista and learn linux!
the thing is i would never get a MS Os when it first came out and wait intill at least service pack 1
