GFX are pretty spectacular if you wind it all up, check the screen shots sticky.
If your display doesn't look like that, try changing the mode and/or settings.
The clouds, the way the smoke spirals, the sea effects, the weathering on the planes (LOMAC still has this wrong IMO, even though its gfx are pretty spectacular), the trees look layered close up at ground level (youdont want to be that low down apart dfrom takeofff and landing, and you shouldn't be looking at the trees then anywya... ), but once up high, they look realistic enough.
The way that once you plane is shot up enough, you can see through the wings, either seeing the ammunition stacks or the scenery below.
Joysticks, not much difference between those two really, the extra button, maybe.
11 or 12 is plenty, though you cant have too many buttons.
I cant see whether either has the 'twist' rudder control. This makes life a lot easier
I'd go for the Extreme 3D being right handed, its more useful for me to have all the buttons on the left hand side of the stick.
Also cant see if the cheaper one has a Hat, but you'll definitely be needing one.

The Extreme 3D Pro has a twist grip (for rudder control), so it's probably best to go for that.
darn when I was typing that I spilt coffee all over my own joystick, let's hope it breaks so I'm forced into buying that X-45
'Make mine a Spitfire, Landlord!'
just bought this game today, so far it seems great. just one problem though, i cant hit any thing
started using keyboard but that was impossable, now im using my microsoft sidewinder gamepad pro thingy - it has sort of analoge mini joystick thingy which is good enuf?
has loads of buttons which is good, cos it seems i will need them all
also im getting some graphics artifacts is it normal? - blue and red lines randomly about once every min its sorta annoying ill try and get a pic of them with fraps (cos i dont know the print screen key yet). is opengl also best?
also it goes slow at 1600*1200 with 6xaa and 16xaf and everything maxed in fights, rest of time its fine - whats causing the slow down - wanted to play in 1280x1024 but cant so ive got it at 1024x768 for now
im finding it v hard to aim as theres only about 1/2 a second to shoot the enemys when you get close before they either turn or you go past them
ill try more of th tutorials quick

i just couldnt imagaine playing this game with anything apart form a full joystick.
tutorial thingy helped a lot - i can imagin why need a joystick - half hour of using gmepad and my thumb is aching! - but atleast ive managed one kill now (though ive had plenty of hits)
any joysticks you can recommend for ~£15? needs to be usb type
re: the graphics...
you'd be best running this at 1024x768 tbh - it's plenty nice enough and you don't get any decrease in image quality. Try also running the ground detail on excellent instead of perfect - the ground will cause a lot of lag when it gets busy. You might want to take your aa and af down a bit, or off completely, or alternatively, get an extra stick or 2 of RAM - I'm running a 9000 non pro and 1GB of Ram and it copes admirably if I don't turn aa on. IL2 is very memory hungry - if you've got a 9800 pro, and only 128MB RAM, you may as well forget turning all the eye candy on. So to recap - set image quality to "excellent" res to 1024x768 and turn off/down the aa and af and you should be ok

gfx:
my card can cope fine with the gfx - look at my sig at the clock speed, almost 2x the stock
it seems to be the mem causing problems - i will get another 512mb stick to fix that, then ill turn agp aperature up a bit and it should run fine.
reson i wanted 1200*1024 is so ALT-TAB'ing doesnt mess up the res in windows. i might try 1600*1200 again with aa turned down to 2 or something, should run fine @ that
ahaa.. the old ALT-TAB... don't do it - it can screw your mouse function up in game and cause all sorts of problems.. plus if you're running TS (which you will do if you get serious - voice comms make it all so much easier) it'll also screw TS up... what you want to do if you need to go back to windows is hit the windows key, it'll go back to desktop and then click on the il2 button on the taskbar to get back to the game. And that doesn't screw windows res or the mouse/JS up

the GSV server when it reappears is the best to play on (where has it gone tho?!? )
ok.. now i seem to always stall while noone else ever does... this game is too hard
Go into controller config in the hardware set-up and ease the controller settings down a bit.
You have to select which axis you're adjusting in the drop down menu top left, then move the sliders according to how much input you want for how much stick movement.
If you're stalling constantly, it might be your flying style is to heave the stick around. If so, knock the first two sliders to zero, then range the others from 10% up to 80%... then have a fly and see how that works for you.
Personally, I have mine the other way, with 10% for the fist band then stepping to 100% on the last two bands, so I know that fully back IS fully back!
I also have the rudder inputs deadened right down as otherwise I find them way too aggressive on take off.
Stick with it, I've heard of some people taking a week just to get into the air succesfully... Zak has yet to plaster over the dents in his wall where the keyboard hit after his 10 ground loop in row!
yep deckards right getting the sensitivity just right is the key but its also a pain in the arse , but once its right u'll find it easier to fly ,small movements are the key not large yanks to the left or right as that will stall u 9 out of 10 times
takeoff is easy peezy i have no idea why some ppl have trouble with it , maybe their just too aggresive
it will take time its taken me a little while but tonight i shot down 5 or 6 and a couple more it didnt credit me for (any 1 know how the points system works??) and i only got shot down by the he111's and once by a 109 (lucky headon shot)that was in a p40 which when i first tried i stalled all the time but now dont, the p39 however i dont think i will ever master as its a b*t*h to fly
oh yea start with the i-16's as there a good training plane nice n easy to fly
You only get credit for kills if you make it back to base and land. I've just come off the GSV server having downed 2 109s, I'm just about to land and a guy who was trailing me makes an attack. He misses me totally, but not the ground and he hits hard right under me. His exploding plane blew mine to bits too... so no points for me!
Ah well, that's war!
A little tip for the I-16... open the throttle gradually, let the speed build and open it some more. If you give it loads of throttle from the off, the left wing will lift massively from the prop wash and the thing'll tip over onto the right wing before you know what's happened.
I reckon it's best to go for an IL-2 to start with, then go for the quicker ones once you're happy in that.
