    Mission ideas for ArmA 2

No promises obviously, but would be nice to have some ideas for suggested missions which I can try building.

My 'Island Attack' mission was based off an idea that Zak came up with, so it's possible to do these things. So - come up with some ideas or scenarios that you'd like to play and I'll look into making it happen.

    town sweep

Choose one of the biggest towns, and have spawn vehicles at either end.

No SMAW's or other rocket launchers, JUST satchels... team to blow up the enemy's respawn vehicle wins.

    No radar...

I seriously need to get back into this game. The sabotage-esque mission sounds quite good

Re: Mission ideas for ArmA 2

I'd say there'd be mileage in "re-writing" some of the classic OFP missions. My fave stealthy multiplayer was the sabotuer mission; 3 of you had to sneak into town under cover of darkness, plant satchels on the road and crawl out of town before the convoy blew the charges and you. Then pray to what ever god you believe in that you managed to bag the BMP and T72 escorts cos you've a 5km hike to your evac point.

Can't remember the name of the other one I liked (we called it Zulu). You had to hold a very small village that was a choke point on a map. You had a fairly limited supply of ammo at the back of the village and the enemy had plenty of bodies and a few tanks.

Then again, I'm guessing your talking about Player Vs Player multiplayer rather than Players Vs army of PC?

Re: Mission ideas for ArmA 2

I haven't got a clue how feasible this type of thing would be, not being all that familiar with ARMA, but some sort of rendition of Battlefield's Wake Island would excellent I reckon, with emphasis on the helicopter-assault side of things.

I realise it's in a similar vein to the Island Attack mission, but anyway, here goes. I would picture it as a small forward base for the US, perhaps on a small island rather than a carrier for the sake of simplicity. They would then be provided with a small helicopter force to get across to the enemy island and pick which positions to assault, from a choice of the main enemy base, or the far smaller northern and southern outposts, each with a single narrow route to the main base. The aim would be for the OPFOR to hold the main base at all costs - if captured by the Americans, the mission is over. However, if it could be held for a reasonable length of time, until reinforcements could be called in, the OPFOR would have succeeded.

The interesting thing would be which strategy each team uses - for the attacking team, if they just flew a Blackhawk straight into the main base they'd be shot out of the sky, so they have two options. They could land near the southern/northern outposts (focussing on taking either one or both of them) and mount a sustained assault until they capture them, then moving their ground troops towards the main base with the aim of capturing that as well - or perhaps (I have no idea whether this is possible) they would be able to draw the OPFOR into a ground battle at one of the outposts whilst a 2 man squad sneaked into the main base, either destroying the AA, in which case the entire force could be dropped directly into the main base, or just quietly destroying other assets and taking control of the point.

Obviously it's got a lot of similarities to Zak's mission, but the crucial aspect in this mission that I enjoy is coming in by air and trying to secure a position - if somebody decides to go in on their own, they've got no chance, but if you get a good team of four down with a diversionary attack on another location, they should theoretically be able to hold off the attacks from the entrenched enemy, and gain a foothold on the island, from which they can work towards the main base and ultimately take control of it.

I think the crucial aspect is picking a suitable location - if the area is too large, then dropping forces in will be very easy, they'll be miles away from the action and have no problem getting set up, and it becomes a typical ground-assault map. If the area is the right size though, they'll have to take a lot of care over when, where and how they land, and obviously the respawning would have to be thought through as well. If the US just drop a spawn point in the trees 200 yards outside of one of the outposts as soon as they make first touchdown, then it defeats the object of the helicopter assault side of things.

I know it probably wouldn't work in ARMA/sucks/etc, but it's more just a collection of ideas than a mission set in stone... the helicopter assault is the main thing, I'm imagining a close contact ground landing against entrenched enemy soldiers, similar to that of Operation Barras in 2000. Anyway, feel free to maul it, just thought I might as well jot down my ideas

That's relatively easy to do, could probably knock that up in a day or so. My only thought would be possibly forcing the play area to go *through* the town, else it'll be too easy to skirt around it and attack from all sorts of odd angles. I'll look into that though, might be able to create a trigger that insta-kills someone if they step outside a specific zone...

Again, doable - but the issue would be finding somewhere big enough to support a decent attempt at landing. The Utes map might be an obvious one, especially attacking from the aircraft carrier but you'd need a decent number of players to make it worthwhile. Also stuff like mobile respawns are very tricky to get working. There's loads of scripts for Co-Op stuff, but PvP is a lot more difficult. Obviously it can be done (Devastation etc proves that) but in practice you need to find the scripts off the web and people are sometimes cagey about letting their work be used in a mission not of their making...

choose a town where 8-10 of us try to take it down but realizes its a trap and we get pinned down with unlimited amount of enemy ai shooting is inside a building and we have to call a chopper to come and rescue us. have that chopper come and fly from the other side of the map to try and rescue us

Again, doable but there's just one issue with that.

The AI would absolutely pwn the chopper that comes in to rescue you. For you to be pinned in a house you'd need pretty much 360 degree coverage from the AI else you'd be able to sneak away out of the back door. Choppers are pretty much priority 1 as far as the infantry AI engagement routines are concerned (once they land anyway), and vehicles will rip them to bits with coax. I'll look into seeing if its possible to get a vehicle to 'appear' to be friendly to the AI.

what about instead of a chopper rescuing you, there is a nearby humvee where we have to leg it into the vehicle and try to escape whilst the AI try to chase us down on their vehicles?

We can then reach the extraction point where their will be friendly AI's located in the map where there are choppers ready for us to hop in whilst the friendly ai's are covering us from enemy ai's.

i got this idea from the tv show called the unit btw worth a watch to get some great ideas of missions to make

Maybe a Black Hawk Down type mission. Theres lots of defending and driving around during the film and this way you could have 3 smaller teams working together and one larger team trying to wipe them out - this idea is heavily dependant onplayer numbers though /sigh...

Re: Mission ideas for ArmA 2

Zak, your APC mission is pretty much done, will be play testing it tonight on the pvp server

I've also implemented a restriction on play area so it forces urban combat

    yeah, damn right.

We can do the Island first, and then swap and then the town....

it should lower the sniper levels and raise the tension again. Besides.. I wanna find out if I can HEAR people in this game..cos so far, sound is only good for bullet impacts and vehicles. I've NEVER heard a bad guy, close by...
