    Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe

Anybody watch that program last night. Think it was on History channel. very interesting, they had all about the Rocket planes, air to air missiles, wire guided air to air missiles and the plan to drop an A Bomb on New York from a Horten Wing (Go-229)
Very very interesting, if you can catch it again its a great program. I might have to record that one if its on again....

A-Bomb on New York would have given the Yanks a right kick in the arse, a much bigger one than Pearl harbour imo...

Yeah, I saw it. They reckoned an A bomb would hasve forced the Yanks to peace talks straight away... the war would have had a very different outcome. It was interesting that the program was hinting that the Northrop guys copied the design of the Gotha for the B1 stealth bomber...

I'm more of the mind that the shape is intrinsicly low radar reflective and the designs would HAVE to be similar to achieve their goals.... The Horten bros were after a low weight, long range aircraft, the B! is designed to be long range and stealthy... it just so happens that a stealth design and a low weight design are the same sort of shape...

Having said that, the Germans found that the Gotha was low radar refelctive... but purely as a side effect od the design... it wasn't MADE to be low radar... it just was.

Aye, it didn't have a tail so it had a low radar pick up.
What I wanna know is how does it rudder without a tail?

It had a set of small airbrakes along the trailing edges of the wing either side, pushing the rudder pedals popped the brakes out momentarily causing a yaw left or right.

Been looking at design sheets for it, can't see how one would be incorporated as a 'fold away' thingy...

But then, looking at the design of it, do you need one?

It has wto embedded egines, so no torque induced yaw, and you can avoid needing rudder in a turn by using back pressure on the stick.

Cos of the low profile, I reckon that crosswind landings, where you'd need a rudder most, wouldnt be a problem.

This gives an idea of the rudder system the flying wings used, I can't track down one specific to the Go229 this is the system they used IIRC

You damn right there. Those Horten bros were pretty damn smart.
    Interesting plans though
