Just finished
Tail End Charlie by John Wainwright
A Rear gunner in Lancs with 5 group who flew 72 sorties all but one in the rear turret, this book is a brillant collection of memories, some funny, some scarey and some that make you glad you didnt go through it.
For example Air Craft recogniton :- Count the engines less than 4 let em have it.
Or the first time he saw an enemy fighter "I was bawling and hollering before Id even switched on the bloody mike. Then, when I did remember the mike I yelled ""theres a bugger coming at us Joe""
Joe "Where? Where?"
John "THERE!" And (so help me) I pointed.
The situation then. Eagle eyed Wainwright, squatting there in the rear turret, not a soul on gods earth able to see so much as a whisker of him...and actually pointing at a german fighter getting into postion to have a go. No wonder Joe went berserk"
The god like awe in which they held that most famous of bomber squadrons 617 who were in his group, comment on those idols Gibson and Chesire.
I read a lot and this has shot right into my top 5 must reads along with in no particular order
